Q: Horrible colors on external monitor using macbook air(2012) with mini dp to hdmi

I have one of the new macbook airs (2012) hooked up to an external monitor (Dell SR2320L) using a mini display port to hdmi adapter.

The dsiplay shows up fine on the external monitor, except for the colors and contrast being terrible. Any color grey on a white background doesnt even seem to render. However if I look at that same image on the airs screen, I can see all of the grey colors perfectly. I have tested the hdmi cable and monitor on different computers and they work perfectly. I have tried three different adapters all with the same problems, leaving me to believe that there is something wrong with the macbook air itself and its ability to output a mini display port signal.

Does anyone know why I would be having a problem like this?

MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

The MacBook Air should be completely clear via any output; easily readable text, colors like they should be, etc. This was the case with the mid-2011 model. Using the EXACT same adapter with the newest (mid-2012) model on the same display results in washed out colors, etc.

The Apple TV as a "fix" is laughable and shouldn't even be an option. I personally have an Apple TV and use it to Mirror in some instances, but I should definitely be able to hook directly to an HDMI display without any distortion issues. Surely, surely, surely this will be addressed in 10.8.2 (as well as improved battery life).

I've done my part as well and filed a bug report.

For what it's worth, I received a Radar reply today for the HDMI display bug that I filed on August 27th, stating that it's a duplicate of another earlier bug.

So someone in the Apple development group is looking at this.

What's a 'radar reply'? Never heard of them?? I filed a bug report with Apple in early August, possibly late July and haven't had any response. What did you do to get a reply?

I'm having the exact same problem. I have a mid-2012 maxed out macbook air. I bought the moshi mini displayport to hdmi adapter and the display on my TV looks terrible: washed out grays, fuzzy text, way too bright and contrasty. When I connect my old white macbook with a mini-dvi to hdmi adaptor (same hdmi cable) it looks perfect. Crisp text, nice colors.

    Any answers yet?

From www.macnn.com, posted 14Sep "Apple pushes out new 10.8.2 build, release eminent" (sic!)

... The accompanying Read Me file asks developers to focus on the same areas as the previous build, primarily graphics performance and quality as well as Image and Media importing, editing and viewing. The update is expected to be a rare "point" release that adds features in addition to fixing issues. The final 10.8.2 is expected to add phone number and Apple ID syncing to iMessage and FaceTime, as well as implement system-wide Facebook integration for users of the social service.

so PERHAPS the "graphics performance and quality" may solve the HDMI garbage output issue. Until then, I would suggest anyone who has yet to post an official bug report do so as per the instructions on the previous page of this thread.

Goto http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html and post a bug report. The more people that do so, the more likely we get a solution from Apple!

I really hope they fix it. It's starting to feel like this issue has ended up in a support black hole.

So is there any way (before the bug is fixed) to connect the 2012 MBA to a 1080p TV that only has HDMI?

For example, does Mini-DP to DVI adapter combined with DVI-HDMI cable work ?

    Thanks in advance.

From other users' experience I'm pretty sure this fix will work - although you will lose any sound that may be transmitted va the HDMI.

    Hi,

I just got a reply from the Apple engineers:

"Apple has received reports of this behavior and is investigating those reports. Apple recommends staying up to date with the latest Firmware and Software for your Apple product using Software Updates."

Apparently, the engineer dealing with the issue has the same problem with his macbook. Well, I guess we should wait and hope it will not take ages.

I do a fair amount of business with Apple and bitched to my business services team in SF about it the other day (also forwarded this thread to them...). Not sure if that's what raised the flag finally, but it probably didn't hurt...
