Q: Horrible colors on external monitor using macbook air(2012) with mini dp to hdmi

I have one of the new macbook airs (2012) hooked up to an external monitor (Dell SR2320L) using a mini display port to hdmi adapter.

The dsiplay shows up fine on the external monitor, except for the colors and contrast being terrible. Any color grey on a white background doesnt even seem to render. However if I look at that same image on the airs screen, I can see all of the grey colors perfectly. I have tested the hdmi cable and monitor on different computers and they work perfectly. I have tried three different adapters all with the same problems, leaving me to believe that there is something wrong with the macbook air itself and its ability to output a mini display port signal.

Does anyone know why I would be having a problem like this?

MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

No good, MacBook Air/Pro Update 2.0 patch didn't help my MBP15 retina connecting to a Dell U2410 via miniDisplayPort.

I submitted a bug report about three weeks ago, and within a week Apple followed up with me.  They sent me an application that captures all display parameters into a report.  I ran the application and sent them the report.  No word yet, but someone DID follow up with me, and the issue is still marked as open.  This seems a much more reasonable route than the court system.  In the meantime, I'm getting by with a DVI adapter.

The 2.0 update didn't work for me, either, but I'm still hopeful that they'll get this fixed if we can get the information to the engineers.

    MacBook Air/Pro Update 2.0

No change here, my macbook air 2012 is connected to an LG LED tv, with the moshi thunderbolt to hdmi adapter and an apple branded hdmi cable from the apple store.

There's now a new Update for MBA and MBP that fixed it for me. Or at least I think it has. Colors and text is now pretty acceptable and the rest is probaply from my lack of calibration skill. I had to play a little bit with the monitor calibration until it looked a lot better.

My advice to you: Use the expert mode of the calibration - it works better than the n00b version^^

Is your Laptop from before or after june this year?

It said the update is for MBA and MBP June 2012.

And you really have to calibrate after installing the update. Because at first I couldn't see a difference.

Yeah it's July 2012, and it's the same here after applying the update.

That's weird. Let's see what other people have to say.

    Hello,

The MBA & MBP 2.0 update did not work for me either.

I could tell right away just by looking at text on the screen, but I went ahead and did the full calibration just to be safe. Still no improvement. I really hope they fix this soon.

Just installed update 2.0.2 on my 2012 MBP. Still no difference.

Colors are washed out and designs in Photoshop looks horrible. I won't buy a $1k+ Apple display out of principle, even though that's most likely what they would like.

Will just continue to warn people of this issue before they go Mac shopping!

Several weeks ago, I took this problem to my local 'Apple Authorized Campus Store' since I live in a college town and there is no 'real' Apple store nearby.

The technicians took some capture data & sent it to Apple to create something they called an "accelerated report". One of the technicians is experiencing the same problem with his personal mid 2012 MBA.

I am being stubborn and refusing to spend more money for the mini DP to DVI --> DVI to HDMI workaround... but I might break down and get it.

    Hello everyone,

as the Apple engineers are not reading these forums usually/regulary, the most effective way to change this issue is to call their support hotline: Call them and talk with them until you get someone who is able to send a report to the engineers (http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57). The more users are doing this the faster something will be changed.

Has anyone tried with an apple tv to see if we can have a 1080p display without the blurry/fuzzy text?

I only have hdmi, so to use dvi, i need DP>DVI and then DVI>back to hdmi

no idea how that works or if it carries audio
