Q: SSD upgrade?

I just ordered my SSD yesterday i got the clone kit. Is it ok to clone it or should i use lion internet recovery? I am going to be backing everything up first andvthe reformatting new drive and do i need to worry about trim? I got crucial m4 256gb. When i remove i will not erase it as i can use it as a backup.

get your drive installed and configured first then we'll worry about trim after.

Sorry to jump into this conversation late. Hopefully you all will still respond.

I just bought a Crucial m4 128GB to install in my old black Macbook 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo (3,1) running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.

I have a few questions before I begin the install process.

What are the best first steps to take for the initial install?

Download and update firmware to SSD?

Erase and set up GUID drive with Disk Utility?

    Enable TRIM?

    Install OS?

I am just wondering if there is a best order of operations for accomplishing all of these tasks? I would hate to install everything and then find it was too late to update the firmware or enable TRIM.

Also, I wonder if I should take this opportunity to upgrade to Lion. My main concern is that I am trying to finish my dissertation and want no tech issues with Microsoft Word and Endnote. I am still using Office 2008 and a no longer supported version of Endnote. I have not upgraded either one because I do not want to risk compatability issues. Once I am done with my dissertation, I will happily upgrade Office, or leave it all together for something cheaper/free. Furthermore, I had lots of things stolen during a recent move, including my software (e.g., Office, Endnote, OS disks). So I do not want to upgrade to Lion if it means I need to re-enter registration info. If that is the case, I would rather just clone my current hard drive and keep using Snow Leopard for the time being. What do you think? What is the path of least resistance to continuing to use my Word/Endnote setup?

Thanks in advance for all your help,

    RJ

see my response to link below and follow the steps...

good luck - Crucial M4 is a good drive - do not update firmware unless you have issues.  install trim after you're up and running...

Thank you for the advice. So I decided to start the process and have already hit a major snag.

For the record, I keep a weekly Super Duper Smart Backup of my laptop on an external firewire hard drive. This is in addition to my nightly Time Machine backups of my user folder to a different external hdd (currently RMA'd to OWC to repair the broken Firewire Port). I also run a monthly Tech Tool Pro scan of my laptop. Everything seemed to be going well.

So the first thing I decided to do was restart my laptop and boot from the external Super Duper drive. From there, I ran Disk Utility and it said my internal laptop drive was corrupt and couldn't be repaired. I couldn't Repair Disk or Repair Permissions.

I wondered if this was due to booting from the external drive instead of from the Snow Leopard Install disk which I currently do not have at home.

So I restarted and booted from my laptop as usual. I ran Disk Utility to Verify Disk on the internal drive and the same warning about corruption came up. This had me worried. So I ran Disk Utility on the connected external Super Duper drive to see if the corruption got passed to the backup drive (is that even possible)? Verify Disk said no problems. But there were lots of Permissions to be repaired (mainly Brother printer, Java, and Remote Management stuff). I did not run Repair Permissions as I didn't want to mess with what appeared to be the "good" drive. Should I go ahead and Repair Permissions on the external Super Duper drive?

I am currently running Tech Tool Pro on the internal laptop drive to see what it says.

Now that you have heard my story, what should I do? Even though Disk Utility tells me that the internal drive is corrupt, is it safe to clone to my new SSD? There were no signs of the hard drive failing before this. As I mentioned, I ran Tech Tool Pro monthly with no warnings.

I would really appreciate any advice you could give me right now.

    Thanks,

    RJ
