Q: SSD upgrade?

I just ordered my SSD yesterday i got the clone kit. Is it ok to clone it or should i use lion internet recovery? I am going to be backing everything up first andvthe reformatting new drive and do i need to worry about trim? I got crucial m4 256gb. When i remove i will not erase it as i can use it as a backup.

MacBook Pro (13-inch Late 2011), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

You can verify and repair your permissions if needed....

Don't worry about trim until you've got it installed in your Macbook and you're up and running.

If your boot time is slow once you've got your ssd installed in your macbook - go to system preferences - startup disk and select your ssd as your startup disk and restart your macbook.

    good luck..

    Here's another weird twist.

I went and got my Snow Leopard Install Disk this morning to boot from it rather than my external Super Druper drive Disk Utility.

I ran Repair Disk on my internal laptop HDD and it repaired all the mess. Ran it again, and it said the drive is okay. I am now running Repair Permissions. So why did this work from the disk and not from my external drive? Is everything okay now? Should I consider cloning to the SSD again to get the repaired data? Or should I just run Repairs Disk/Permissions on the SSD now?

Why is this never clear and easy:)

if you've got time to kill and the repairs have been done - clone it again if you want.....

or you can install your ssd and do the disk permission repair after you're up and running....

nothing is every clear and easy - life would be boring if it was.....

look at it this way, if you see someone in this forum that is experiencing what you just went through, you can give them the steps you did so they can get their drive up and running....

at least you're a very patient person who'll try everything without giving up.

To clone it again, would it be beneficial to Zero Out the SSD drive beforehand?I am going out later so could leave it Zeroin out. Then I could have the clone happen over night. But would this really do anything more than just running the Repairs on the SSD right now?

clone it again, don't zero it out, just format it.....

it will give you a cleaner clone since all repairs have been done...

    Ok.

For the record, I plugged the SSD into my laptop while it was booted from the Snow Leopard Disk and ran Disk Utility Repairs. It Repaired Disk until OK, and Repaired Permissions. But I think I will take your advice and start over clean anyways.

On a side note, I have a quick question about my external enclosure the SSD is currently, but my HHD will soon go into. As I mentione dbefore, it came with a Y cable for pluggin into 2 USB ports. Now that the drive is formatted, it seems to work fine with only 1 USB plugged in. Is this okay to do or am I running the risk of not providing the HHD with the necessary power?

    Thanks again,

    RJ

my external drive has only one cable that goes to my usb port....if you've got the y adapter, use it with your conventional drive since it needs more power than your ssd drive...

    Thanks.

I am about to format the SSD in order to clone again.

Once done, I may use Tech Tool Pro to attempt some repair on the HHD, even though Disk Utility no longer mentions corruptions. Then i will have another dilema: if the repairs do something, do I clone AGAIN to the SSD? Or just run with what I have?

Thanks. I was about to format the SSD when I decided to boot from it externally to see how it is doing. I am greeted by a screen titled: Choose Application. It asks "Where is installer?" with a long list of applications and utilities, including Airport Base Station Agent, iCal, Keychain Scripting, and Xmarks for Safari, to name a few. Is this what will greet me when I finally install the SSD into my laptop? What am I supposed to do at that point?

If I hit cancel, I seem to be able to maneuver the drive just fine. Applications open and I can do stuff. There are some applications that don't work perfectly (i.e., Endnote Cite While You Write doesn't work within Word 2008), but I am guessing I need to look up some little trick to get those up and running again. Thoughts?

    that's something new for me....

try this - restart it again - before doing so, when you hit the restart button - take the checkmark off - reopen windows when logging back it...

That is not an option on my Snow Leopard. Isn't that from Lion?
