Q: SSD upgrade?

I just ordered my SSD yesterday i got the clone kit. Is it ok to clone it or should i use lion internet recovery? I am going to be backing everything up first andvthe reformatting new drive and do i need to worry about trim? I got crucial m4 256gb. When i remove i will not erase it as i can use it as a backup.

MacBook Pro (13-inch Late 2011), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I just deleted the Xmarks as I now use Chrome.

But all the others I use daily. Sophos is my anti-virus.

I could not have Chrome as a login item, but will that make that much of a difference?

since my login items are empty - not quite sure what to tell you....

do you really need sophos running in the background?  have you tried ClamX AV?

sometimes, a memory resident anti virus can cause issues...

It is the anti-virus provided by my university. It is a free app that is supposedly very robust. So I have used it for years. Regardless, that would not be the cause behind my computer asking for installer files, would it?

no, i don't think your antivirus is the cause......it was just a suggestion to use a non memory resident antivirus to keep your macbook up to speed...

I haven't forgotten about you. I just have been away from my project to celebrate my wife's birthday.

I believe my SSD is ready to install. Is there anything I should check on it or do before the physical installation? Any new thoughts on this weird "Where's the installer? screen? I hope it doesn't pop up once the SSD is physically installed.

I am also concerned about programs like Dropbox and Sync Manager. How do I tell them that the new drive is the new home drive?

    Thanks again,

    RJ

try booting your ssd externally if you can't see any problems/issues - then go ahead with the install.

one more thing - rename your ssd to the current name of your Macbook's internal HD.

if your internal drive is called Macintosh HD then use the same name...

good luck and happy birthday to your wife - that was a good thing you did, drop the computer stuff and spend time with the wife...

Thanks. I treated her to a night away at a nice hotel with a pool. Everything was going great until a rainstorm settled in today. So now we are back home and I can get back to work;)

I will name the new drive exactly as the old harddrive. Will this addres some of my Dropox worries? I would imagine the new drive has a new official computer name so Dropbox might think it is just another computer I am syncing to my account. I want it to recognize the new drive as the new permanent home of folders, and therefore, not to overwrite them or try to create a new Dropbox folder. Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    RJ

sorry, since i don't use dropbox, i can not really confirm anything on that one.

what i've noticed before however, if the newly installed drive has a different name than the old one, some apps acts weird but works fine when the drive got renamed to the original name.

    Ok.

I renamed the SSD just by clicking on it in the finder and giving it the exact same name as my HDD.

But when I restart and hold option, it is still has the old name. I checked in Disk Utility and says the new name. The old name only appears on the option restart. Is there something else I need to do to rename correctly?

EDIT: Just restarted again and it has the new name with a 1: Macintash HD1.

EDIT AGAIN: But in the Finder, it is fine: Macintash HD.

ok...boot with your ssd - when your hd icon in your desktop - right click on it and select get info - try to rename from there.  if that doesn't work - then rename it after you've intalled it in your macbook.

Everything seems to be working fine while booted from the SSD. Those initial issues with Installer and programs seemed to have disappeared. Must be related to the name of the drive. Connections between programs must have been severed by different naming.

So I think I am about to physically make the move. I will let you know how it goes.

Once done, my final concern will be getting Time Machine up and running again from my new drive to the old backups. Hopefully the same name will make this seamless. Fingers crossed!

Of course! I should have know this would happen. The star-shaped screwdriver I have is just a little too big for undoing th bracket on the Mac HHD. So I need to go buy one, unless there is some other little trick. Any ideas?

here are the tools you need - for the back of your Macbook and hard drive retainer - #00 Phillips - for your hard drive side screws - T6 Torx....Radio Shack carries them....

Aha! I knew I had them here somewhere. I found the right size and have now installed. About to start up for first time! Wish me luck.
