Macbook Retina Display isight camera not working - graphics freeze

I recently bought a base MBP-RD and can say that I am overall impressed with it, though I have found a couple issues already. One of them is related to the iSight camera which for some reason doesn't work. The camera appears in system profiler, but it shows as "camera not detected" when trying to launch application like iChat, Skype, FaceTime, etc. I already tried re-installing OSX Lion, and still not working.

I have also found some weird issue with graphics where it freezes a series of frames when going to Mission Control or App Expose.

I am returning this computer as there are other things I didn't like, but overall pretty impressive (no LED battery indicator, no Lock slot, no sleep light indicator...)

Please reply if you have same issue.

BTO is built to order. I had a model with 16GB of RAM which isn't one they keep in stock.

If you have one of the standard configurations they will probably have one in stock. Just tell them that you paid for a brand new laptop, the one you received has never worked properly and you expect it replaced with a brand new laptop. It's a professional machine, it has never worked as it should and you can't afford to be without it while they try and repair it. If they say no, then ask for a manager. I believe replacements need manager approval anyway.

Okay~ I see, meet manager would be helpful~

Actually, I replaced my display 2 weeks ago because the burn-in issue~

While now, the burn- in issue coms back, they didn't give me a good display without burn in issue~

and what's more, the iSight doesn't work~!

I should talke to the manager~!

I only get my rmbp for 4 weeks~ while I need to repair it twice!!

Thanks for your help

i'm almost sure its a software issue my friends because first:

logout (with closing all the apps) ALWAYS solves this, of course reboot does.

but when i chose to logout with the option to open windows when logging back in... it doesn't!

as far as my humble memory knows, when you log out normally, the computer shuts down all the processes running so i guess there's sth wrong going on in the background... com'n like that fan issue! the update solved it

i don't know about oher cases, but if it was a hardware issues, howcome a rearragnement of what apps or processes r working (logout, reboot) solves it -always- ?

I see what you're saying about it being software, but I don't agree. The laptop I had replaced had the problem with fresh installs of Lion and Mountain lion. If it was just a software issue then every single rMBP would have the problem out of the box. This is not the case. My replacement works fine. It seems to me like a problem with temperamental hardware.

I wouldn't be surprised though if it isn't possible to 'cover up' the issue with a software patch. ie they could find what it is about a logout that satisfies the flaky hardware and just do that every time the webcam is trying to start up (eg respawn the hung process etc)

my friends, in MY case (which is that the camera loses connectivity ONLY when selecting -sleep- from the apple icon menue..)

restarting plus holding : alt+cmd+R+P solved it!

while restarting, hold those buttons together, it will loop through the restart process, in my case i let it loop like three times, and this solved it for me! i've done several tests, closed the lid, for hours, selected sleep from menu for hours as well, and all is good 🙂

hope it helps if someone has exactly the same sitiuation in here...

Same problem here. However, my rMBP used to work fine for several weeks (I ordered mine one day after it was released and received it two weeks later). No issues at all with the camera. It was only recently when I noticed the problem using Skype. Checking other applications, i.e. FaceTime, PhotoBooth the camera was also not responding. I have no clue what this was triggered by. However, it appear under USB hardware section. One time when checking the hardware the camera was not showing at all.

I can confirm that after restart, or log-off (w/o recovering open windows) the problem is fixed temporarily.

I have contacted Apple and will see what solution they suggest.
