Stabilization option disappears for some clips

Hi. Need a little help. When I highlight some clips in my timelin, the options for Stabilization and Rolling Shutter simply do not appear in the video Inspector -- but those options are there when I highlight other clips.

Could you help me get the Stabilization option back for these clips?

In more detail, what happens is this:

  • In my timeline, I highlight one clip and all the standard video options appear in the Inspector: Color, Transform, Crop, Distort, Stabilization, Rolling Shutter, Spacial Conform, Compositing
  • I highlight another clip, and Stabilization and Rolling Shutter are the only options missing entirely in the Inspector
  • I've tried clicking on the down arow in the top left corner of the affected clips, and selected Analyze and Stabilize, but that does nothing and does not make the Stabilization and Rolling Shutter options appear in the Inspector
  • I've also tried launching a whole new project, dragging some of that footage back into the timeline, and the same thing happens: no Stabilization option in the Inspector

Been editing for months in FCPX and this is the first time this problem has come up. Did I accidentallyy click a button I shouldn't have? Any help to resolve this would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

I thought I had the same problem. But then the solution was simple:

I had created a multicam clip, and was working on a bladed section where the "stabilization" function seemed to have disappeared. But when I double-clicked the clip in the timeline, the individual camera angles showed up in a separate window. Then, selecting the clip I was working on, the stabilisation function did appear and allowed for the necessary process.

I've had this problem too, and I'm not sure what the cause is, but the easiest way I've found to deal with it is to select the original clip in the event browser, drag it onto the troublesome clip in the timeline (so that you see the little green plus sign), and choose "Replace from start." That will at least leave all your markers, titles, etc. in place.

I hope that helps someone, and that Apple manages to address this problem in the next update!

Count me in too. It is very intermittent. Sometimes the option will be available when I first move the clip to the Timeline but when I break apart the video and audio, go to the Audio Inspector view and then back to the Video Inspector view, the options will disappear. I did start a new event and turned off the “analyze” option when I reimport the clips but it’s still hit or miss on whether the options will be available.

Just to add more to the observations of this annoying bug...

It seems to be a very random bug! I have an edited sequence that has been made up from mostly one long camera movie file (orginal is HDV 25p). On the project time line, some of the clips have options for stabilisation, whilst some are missing and yet all these clips on the timeline come from the same movie file in the event folder!

If I go back to the event movie file clip and re-select a range to replace a rogue timeline clip it results in the same thing - no stabilisation options. However I have found one workaround: select a rogue clip in timeline, press shift F to show it in the event browser. Now, create a new project, drag the clip selection in the event browser to the new project timeline and I get the stabilisation option back. select the clip in this timline and cmd C to copy it. Go back to the original project timeline and delete the rogue clip from the timline, then paste to effectively put the clip back in. this worked for me.

This is the second bug I've found recently that has properly wasted time for me. I think we need to tread carefully with FCP X - which is otherwise an awsome app.

Hi,

It happens when you remove the audio from clip you had imported.

Well at least that happened to me.

I recorded clips using 5D2, 5D3 and a 1DX with native mic, Rode Mic and a H4N.

Native mic, I replaced the audio with H4N's. Upon doing this, I realised, stablization option is gone.

Pretty sure this is a bug.. Even detaching the audio, bring the volume down, the stablization option goes missing as well.

If I were to stablise the clip BEFORE taking original audio away and use a different source, background task simply hangs at 0%. Had to quit the application and it will prompt/warn me that background task will also quit.

This is however, solved by simpling reducing the volume of clip imported (blue) without detaching audio from clip). So that channel is silent and my new imported audio (from my H4N, green) is dubbed over my clip.

Works like a charm. I think I complicated things myself when I detach the audio (which is was my workflow!).

I too have had the issue, and for me it did involve clips that I imported under 10.0.5 or 10.0.6 - and I'm now using 10.0.7. I'm not sure if that's the cause of the issue though it may be of note for some of you.

For me, simply 'replacing from start' with the same clip didn't work. Also, all clips had been analysed for stabilisation and rolling shutter on import.

The solution I found, however, combined both of these. First, even though the clips were already analysed, I unticked the stabilisation and rolling shutter option for each affected clip, and clicked 'OK'. I then went back and reticked them.

Straight away, FCPX started doing the analysis anew (didn't restore the old one). I was then able to 'replace from start' once the clips had been analysed again.

My theory is that something in the updates either deletes or corrupts old analysis files, or at least makes them unreadable in the newer version of FCPX. Some clips were unaffected, even clips from the same capture original, from the same camera. I found that as a general rule, longer clips were affected, though that could have been coincidence.
