Welcome to the Apple Community.
No, unfortunately all content must be played through iTunes.
This is correct, but who on earth doesn't have an itunes account? I have successfully done this task. I have been converting my dvd collection to mp4's and placing them in a folder on my TC. Then I drag and drop them to my itunes movies folder. (Make sure you disable the "copy to itunes media folder "in your itunes preferences...this way ththe file stays on the TC and is not copied to your computers hard drive.)
When I go into my aTV and then play a movie there is about 10-15 seconds of spinning pin wheel buffering before it plays but other than that I couldn't be happier.
But what that means is that my mac should be ON all the time when i want to watch a movie on my HDTV. That is not very convenient.
Yes. Just bought it thinking I would be able to play directly from my Time Capsule, but am going to send it back and buy another player, probably from Western Digital, that can acces the files directly.
I am very disappointed with Apple: they do make the best hardware, but all those limitations they put on the way you can use them is a shame.
😟
I agree!
I also bought my time capsule just to stow my mac away and play my library directly on my appleTV :(
They need to fix this! With my ipads, ipod, iphone, appleTV and everything going on, my mac will only come out when I need it for some project. To keep it running just to manage my iTunes is out of the question!
Fix this please!

That's entirely up to you. However do you realise that many of the features of the Apple TV rely on integration with iTunes, without it, well you just have the poor experience you do with other products, even though you may be able to access content from a network drive.

It isn't broken, it works that way because it's supposed to.
I for one don't wish to lose the many features only available from Apple TV because of iTunes integration, if you don't like the way it works, consider buying another product.
Just my 2 cents:
While I am certain this significant limitation is not an accident, it is nevertheless an inconvenient limitation for some that could easily be rectified by installing a skinny version of iTunes locally on the Time Capsule that could communicate directly with an Apple TV. Why don't Apple consider that as an option to improve their already superior products?
Ryan- This is a long shot getting in touch with you. I followed your instructions. It worked for about three movies, but now I can't get the rest to show up. Any advice. Your help is appreciated!
