How to move files from Trash.

Have files in Trash ; these can be viewed in Finder. When trying to open them from there, message pops up reading '.... to open move it from Trash'. Selecting and dragging to an opened Pages document causes the selection to snap back. The selection can be printed out from Finder.

Surfed through the forum for a solution and found this same operation advised, without information on how to do it. Question is, how to make the move permanent?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.6), Canon Scanner, Canon printer

Way back in pre-OS X days there was a "Put Away" command in the File menu that could be used on files in the Trash and was used to eject removable media. The Put Back command was introduced in Snow Leopard & only works as a contextual menu for files in the Trash. Sometimes a step back is a leap forward! 😀

If you get the green dot with a cross it means you are moving it not to the HD you are and the Trash is on but to another partition or device. I usually just drag the file to the desktop. Most of the times I will trash them right away again. No need to put them anywhere else. If you want to put them in a certain folder first put them on the desk top and then in the Finder move them to where you want them.

Many thanks to all who contributed to my question. From the discussions, three methods of recovering files from Trash are possible. Some files and folders can be dragged directly from Trash into an opened programme, others from Trash onto the desktop and opened in a programme. The third uses a right click on a file in Trash and select Put Back from the contextual menu. It seems the appropriate way depends upon the file extension e.g., .jpg, .exe etc
