Retina Macbook Pro show Display icon in menu bar?

I accidentally removed the Display icon from my menu bar and cannot get it back on there. There's no check box in the Displays category in System Preferences to show the icon in the menu bar like in older versions. Even spotlight searching "menu bar" in the System Preferences show a result saying "Show displays in menu bar" pointing me to the Display category but there isn't an option there.

I read the article that was posted. It says that the scaled resolutions do not give the same visual quality that the "Best" mode does, even if you choose the one that most resembles a big 2800 size desktop.

Does anyone know more about how the retina resolution works in best mode vs the scaled mode. It is interesting.

I also hope they restore access to the display in the menu bar...

From my experience, the scaled "larger text" gives a slightly more blury look and the scaled "more space" is too small to see how sharp the text/images look. The "best (retina)" setting looks the best with the sharpest text and images (that support it).

This link shows comparisons of the scaling http://www.anandtech.com/show/6023/the-nextgen-macbook-pro-with-retina-display-r eview/6

You're definitely right. I hadn't noticed that. Whenever you connect any external display, after the flicker/blink, the display icon appears in the menu bar regardless if it's mirroring or not. Then it disappears after you disconnect the display. Thanks!

I don't mind it not being there permanently now as it's mainly beneficial when there's an external display hooked up.

I miss this feature soooo much.

I connect to displays of various resolutions every other day due to my job as a VJ and not being able to see this in the menu bar is incredibly frustrating.

Please bring back support to the professionals, Apple. It's just a simple option, you can disable it by default, can't you? All we want is to click it back into existence.

And please bring full support to Matrox displays, and better support to seeing ALL of the resolution options.

Gah.
