I'm still on Logic 8. Why? Because it works for me, I can get virtually unlimited tracks, all the people I work with can play in time or push the beat or pull the beat without mass editing and first and foremost I am an engineer.

This constant need and urgency to update is ridiculous. And the colours? Okay, each to their own. I want to get on and record, mix and produce music.

When Logic X does finally arrive this forum will be full of a load of idiotic posts because they updated in the middle of a record one evening and now this or that or the other doesn't work.

The pros here will answer: Just revert to the backup of your whole system before the update. The replies will be that they made no backup and this will go on for ever and ever.

Please, just go to Pro Tools and when that doesn't make you the engineer you think you are, go to Nuendo then Cubase etc etc etc etc.

Blueberry is right, what do you expect from this forum?

Jul 6, 2012 2:46 AM in response to Blueberry

What i would expect is all to do with the apple as a company, we buy their hardware which is quite expessive

to use their software as well, just for example: how on earth we would buy next generation of macbook pro with retina display when their logic's studio has such a graphic as it has? the font is so small on the left menu and when you look for the plugins, the bloody instruments font oh god.........looks like from 1980 ,not intuitive at all to work with! Apple should take this bussines seriously , if they do not have a team of good programmers who are more efficinet then they they should sell logic to some other company to care of it!

However , what I love about logic is how it uses the cpu.

Jul 6, 2012 6:23 AM in response to skazni

I don't think Apple would decide to sell Logic to another company so it was "well looked after"! Apple seem to just see Logic as a low-priority side project that generates sales of their hardware.

I am not sitting round hoping for an update for the sake of it, however I'd love to see some of the long-standing bugs resolved, either as part of a new release, or an incremental update to Logic 9. The number of bugs that have hung around for years definitely suggests Apple doesn't take much pride in Logic.

That said, CPU usage is a highlight of Logic (especially the dual buffers - one for record tracks and another for playback tracks - which no other DAW offers), and I suspect is a key reason a large portion of more serious Logic users haven't moved to Cubase, ProTools or Digital Performer.

I'm not too worried about fonts and colours though - if the core functionality and stability are there, I can adapt to any colour scheme the developers choose to go with!

Jul 19, 2012 4:23 PM in response to skazni

What bugs, exactly? Most users I know, myself included, either moved to or chose to start with Logic because, in the grand scheme, it's virtually bug-free assuming the user bothers to make sure his or her machine is properly maintained, plugs and software all properly installed and maintained. If your main concern is really colors and fonts, perhaps you should consider switching focus to graphic design rather than audio work. Logic 10 will magically appear when the time is right. In the meantime I sincerely hope its developers are putting all of their effort into almost anything OTHER than colors and fonts.

Seriously. Do not be so hasty.

Logic 9 still has bugs but Logic has been my friend since the early 90's so i've been through the good and the sh*t times with her. I skip from PT to AVID and FCPro7 to Logic all the time and right now, we're good, however:

If Apple's recent track record serves, Logic10 is likely to kill all of your purchased plug ins, cause memory errors (64/32bit disappearing menu's, crashing 32 bit server… etc…) and be completely incompatible with any other professional recording studio.

Lets hope not, but Apple are being VERY forceful in imprisoning users at the moment and most studio's and Post (major tv broadcasters!) I know of will be hanging on to Apple until they force the next upgrade, then the plan is to fully move away from The Beautiful Dictatorship. It'll be sad!

Aug 4, 2012 1:49 AM in response to Pancenter

haha! Totally!

I've been Logic help desk for a looong time now and that one's crept up a few times.

My goodness… specially when OSX came in and Apple forgot to supply AUDIO capability for a while.

I nearly fell for that one, too.

Always very wise to wait a little. As long as your clients are happy and you're compatible with everyone on your project, the process doesn't matter so much.

I still use system 9 for some things!!

Aug 4, 2012 3:23 AM in response to skazni

Skazni,

I share your senitment, yes they Apple are very slow compared to other companies but I can guarentee you that Apple will blow you away with the next level application of Logic.

I still use Logic 8 and I saw no reason to upgrade to Logic 9 so believe me when I say I am eagerly awaiting the new Logic, and I have been using Logic since 1998.

I also use Protools, and anyone who is user of both Tools & Logic can tell you that both have their pro's and cons, this is not a debate, it's fact. Logic excels in music programing, arrangement & compostion where ad Protools out performs in it's audio editing, recording and UI. Oen needs to be a long time user of both to understand where the on out does the other, to just use one and say Logic is the best is a joke.

If I cast your memory back to around 08/09 when Digidesign (now Avid) brought out PT8 it was a revolution for Pro Tools users, all of a sudden it was giving Logic a run for it's money, as earlier versions of Protools was (to put it bluntly) **** house in it's music creation, terrible midi, terrible UI for music arrangment, Messy operation and terrible window planning along with nightmare soft synth interaction not to mention hardly any built in synths. HOWEVER, when PT8 was released only the duo users (of PT & Logic) would recognise that Digidesign had stolen nearly all LOGICS music creation genius wiping the floor with the current verion of logic at the time. And any long term logic users reading this will know that Logi 9 was a poor attempt to counteract PT8, however I did not think that was their intention.

So around 2009ish we had Protools the best audio editing SW available who had now stolen all of Logics music making (in laymans terms) ideas, leaving Logic to merely rot with pie on it's face. Needless to say Logic is still spectacularly powerfull in it's own right and is still my choice of daw for music creation. However we did see Apple drop it's prices to a vulgar and pathetic $200 to draw the consumer back in. Seriously as a long term user who has paid shy of $2000 (two thousand dollars in the past I was not impressed, however it's not about me) for Logic, I was a little scared for the future of the App.

So here I am in 2012 still waiting for Apple to release the new Logic and I suspect this will blow any other daw out of the water with both Music Creation UI and NEW LEVEL AUDIO EDITING that will surpass Pro Tools in every way possible.

Apple, please wrap it up soon, we are tired of waiting. We love you.

PS: dont screw it up like you did FCPX.

PPS: I dont proof read, excuse typos and any other errorz's'z/.

Logic 9 has been really bothering me with random hickups when I'm doing big sessions. I seriously hope Apple takes all of these comments I have read over the last few years seriously. It was very sad to see Logic 9 be marketed to musicians and not professionals when it went live on the app store. I thought thats what garageband was for.... I trained with this DAW over Protools because of it's great workflow and features... but now I'm starting to regret it. I have never been dissapointed with Apple, but this will hit me hard if we get a new application tailored to musicians and not professionals. Nobody wants to use a pro application that is dialed up for ease. You might as well put the stupid Auto-chording guitar in the new software too.

Here, have some music software where you don't need to be good at music at all... But i guess that's todays music industry in all catagories... Wrap it up, they'll take it.

And of course, we are all here waiting without any notice or hype on a new version. I might as well start learning Tools just in case Apple fails. GIVE US A ******* UPDATE OR STOP WASTING OUR TIME!

Aug 6, 2012 1:03 PM in response to alysian

Bottom Line:

Apple markets their software to sell hardware. Unfortunately, Logic is a pain in the neck for Apple. Logic requires Apple carry a trained support staff, that's way too much support resources especially for software the bulk of which was programmed before Apple purchased it. You know it's not right when professionals call Apple for Logic support and get referred to this forum. We the users, are the support staff who are taking it at both ends right now, we give free support while the software languishes in no-mans-land. Professional software requires professional support.

any long term logic users reading this will know that Logi 9 was a poor attempt to counteract PT8,

I have used Logic since the initial version, and think Logic 9 is the most significant Logic release which ver has been released, especially since it has a lot of audio editing improvements. Flex alone makes Logic 9 a lot better for what I do than eg. PT's now outdated "Beat Detective", and Logic 9 also has many more or less well-known changes which helps the editing workflow a lot.

Also - if you look at the list of what Pro Tools users miss in Pro Tools 10 - you'll find a lot of stuff which Logic already has.

But every time I ask a PT user what *exactly* he finds better in PT when it comes to workflow and audio editing, the response is very vague. They usually mention a couple pf things Beat Detective can do, and what I explain that you can do the same stuff in Logic - faster, they start talking about something else.

So - since you probably know Logic well - your post made me curious about what specifically it is that you think PT does better than Logic 9.... not as in 'mixing', 'audio editing' etc, but as in... details! :-)

In my exprience, Logic 9 is so deep in it's feature set that even experienced users are missing some of the editing goodies L9 has. L9 is great for audio editing, and eg. have key commands for almost very possible editing task.

But (luckily) Logic has a very non-cluttered user interface: some of the most powerful features are 'hidden' behind a simple menu option. So - please enlighten me re. what it is that you think Logic should do better (in version 10) - stuff which isn't already adressed in L9. Thanks in advance. :-)
