Toast says my material is both NTSC and PAL

I have a few small projects that I wanted to burn on DVD. Toast says there are both PAL and NTSC movies in my material. I need PAL.

Can I select PAL in Final Cut Pro X or where can I find that setting?

Help would be much appreciated.

Assuming you are making a PAL DVD set your project to PAL 25fps etc.

Add 30fps NTSC clip to timeline, select it and click Conform Speed.

Above the clip you should see a thick orange bar with Slow (83%) written in the middle and above that a black bar with the word Retiming.

On the very top will be a thin orange render line which has to be rendered.

Note that you only conform the clips that are the wrong speed for the timeline . . . in this case the NTSC ones.

Good evening Ian,

Thank you for helping me. I am, however, more and more confused about this. I have conformed speed as you suggested. It didn't help very much.

My first question now is: Can i delete the FCPX application from my system, then try to download it again from the App Store and start all over (I have already both copied it and moved the original app to a separate Hard Drive)?

Second question: Were is the place (menu) in FCPX that allows me to choose PAL as the default setting for all my coming and present events and projects in FCPX? You say I should set my project to 25 fps. Were is that done?

Third question: Does everythin depend on the camera settings? Camcorder is for PAL but I don't know about the still camera and it's video clips.

Your help is appreciated.

I don't know why you want to delete it, but if you do, the easiest way is with this free app

When you start a new project you will be given a choice of formats.

If you select "Set based on first video clip", the moment you drag a PAL clip to the timeline it will create a PAL project. If you drag NTSC it will create an NTSC project.

However, if you choose "Custom" you can click the dropdown menu (arrowed) and select PAL SD

I have just noticed your third question.

Most still cameras that shoot video do so at 30fps so FCP X thinks it is NTSC.

However, if you conform it to 25fps it should be recognised as PAL.

Having said that, I have used 720p high definition footage from my still camera, but you said it was standard definition so maybe the frame size is an NTSC one.

Frame sizes of PAL and NTSC are identical in High Definition . . . . only the shutter speed is different.

I just thought I might start from scratch with the FCP X installed fresh. But with your new instructions I opened a new project, made it PAL 25 fps and it seems to be allright. Tomorrow I'll put in some new material and see what happens.

By the way, does iDVD accept material edited in FCP X? I tried that, but it said there are some problems. It seems the problem lies in the themes in iDVD. I have v. 7.1.2. Are there newer versions?

Thank you for taking the time to solve my problem.

In the new PAL project I imported photos and clips from my still camera, video clips from iPhone and a clip taken with the FaceTime camera on my Mac. They all had different fps so I conformed them all at the same time. Some conformed 83%, some 175%, some 100%, and some not at all. This was just a test project.
Thanks to you I have learned something new again. It takes time, but I hope I shall some day master this FCP X as fluently as I worked with good old iMovie HD and iDVD.
