I know it's been years since you asked that question but I might have found a solution and will list this for future troubleshooting by others.
I tried everything from reset PRAM etc etc to baby wipes on credit card etc etc.
The only thing that did the trick for me is blowing air into the opening of the optical drive on the side.
My optical drive has not worked in a year I think and suddenly accepts DVD and CD again. 😉
Hope this will do the trick for longer.

Yea pretty much I am a college student and have a class coming up that uses cds. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
As Limnos suggested, the SMC is the most relevant possible solution. You can try a PRAM reset as well, but it's not as relevant. I just helped someone earlier with this issue and it worked after the PRAM, but it could have been due to some other factor.😉
how do u reset the PRAM?

Just in case anyone finds their way back to this thread - if the above problem is happening to you (as it was to me) take a lens cleaning wipe, wrap it around a credit card and place it in the dvd/cd slot lifting the card to exert gentle downward pressure inside the computer onto the disc drive's lens. Move the card about gently to clean the lens.
This has always fixed the above problem for me, it is caused by dust on the lens.
You do it at your own risk, I'm only telling you what works for me.
What do you do when your CD is automatically ejected from your MacPro slot drive? I tried cleaning the lens as suggested but found it does not work for my situation.
