mds running at 97-100% CPU

Hi there,

MDS is running at 97-100% CPU. What could be the causes?

running 10.6.8


$ ps auxww | grep mds

You can kill it, but it will just reappear. Open Activity Monitor, list All Processes in the dropdown menu. Select the mds process, click on the Quit icon in the toolbar then click on the Force Quit button.


It's quite possible you have a problem with your Spotlight index and/or database. The site I linked will show you how to delete these so Spotlight starts completely fresh.


Note that the more files on your drive the longer it will take Spotlight to complete indexing especially if you continue using the computer.
