iphone 3G can't connect to you tube?

I have an old iPhone 3G that my kid is using as an ipod. But it won't connect to youtube. Restrictions are not enabled and it's been restarted. When we try and open the you tube app, a pop up comes up saying "Can't connect to youtube." We are on wireless network at home.
