How do I put custom iMessage tones on my iPod touch?

I want to put custom text tones for iMessage on my ipod touch. Is this possible? I haven't had any success. I converted a few files to ringtones in itunes and tried to drag them over but it just said "This file can't be played on this iPod." My ipod is a 3rd generation.

Look on the app store for a ringtone maker, which can make ringtones from music. You can also get tones off of iTunes. Once you do this, go to settings, sounds, text tone, and chose your ringtone.

I've been trying to do it, but to no avail. If there really is a way to do this, I would want to know.
