iPad battery died and now it won't charge because it keeps turning on and off

My 1st generation iPad's battery died so I plugged it in. When I did, the Apple logo came up and it went to the lock screen for probably about 2 seconds and then turned off to the loading spinning wheel thing. It turned all the way off and then went back to the logo screen and did it again. It's been doing this for about two hours now and I don't know what to do. When I plugged it into my Mac, iTunes would only recognize it the short time that it is on the lock screen so I can't reset it or do anything with it at all. Heeelllllpppp??

Using the iPad Charger... Contect to a Wall Outlet and charge it for at least an hour.

Then...

1: Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.

2: If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane.

3: If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try using the steps in this article to force the device into recovery mode.
