Refer to this article:
How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library
If you don't have too many duplicates, you can use iTunes to show you these by using the "display duplicates" option under File menu. You can then remove duplicates manually in iTunes.
If this isn't working for you, there's a number of third party programs that can help you with this. The one I used is called Tune Sweeper, it removed a lot of iTunes duplicates automatically saving me lots of time. You can also use Tune Sweeper to display and remove missing songs from iTunes (those with an exclamation mark).
I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link. <Edited by Host>
thanks, wiclee!
I searched and searched due to having duplicates all the time. Manually doing it is just alot of work. I found some great freeware that works. It is Itunesdsm. Works great!
I am getting the error message "Syntax Error- A unknown token can't go here". It is referring to the ' in the first line. I am using Script Editor 2.3 on Osx 10.6.8.
thanx for tips
Thank you! I couldn't find it under File but it was under View, like you said so! Thanks again!
I can see this option, however it appears to just show all the songs that are duplicates, including the file you would want to keep.. therefore the delete all option would appear to delete all the songs that have a duplicate song, leaving you without any track ?
With iTunes 11 the show duplicates feature is now under the View menu. Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Or use my DeDuper script if you don't want to do it by hand. Please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping. See this thread for background.

I already recommended this in another post. I was looking for a solution regarding this issue and I found it in this article: iTunes – Delete Duplicates. Indeed there are endless resources regarding this issue and none of them worked for me. The tool referenced in the above article can remove duplicate songs not only from iTunes, but from your entire computer. It performs real audio analysis and can find similar songs even if they are not marked with tags. I strongly recommend this tool as it was th only one of this type that really works. There is a free demo available and the tool costs just about 20 bucks.
