I have a bluetooth keyboard for my iphone but I can't send messages without being at the phone - which negates having the keyboard. Is there a shortcut to be able to send messages?

A keyboard is a keyboard, not a communications device. Bluetooth removes the need for a cable, nothing more.
You need to be 'at the phone' for the keyboard to work and to see what you are typing. Were you expecting the Bluetooth keyboard to allow you to send messages without the phone?
For the whole story I connect the Iphone to my TV for 40" of Iphone lovelyness. I use imessage alot but hate the iphone keyboard hence my buying a new one. Since it would appear that I have just attracted responses that would intimate I'm an idiot for wondering if there was a key combination that would actually send a message I withdraw my question and will go back to my PC and skype.
Ah, "the whole story" - always useful to start with that for people who aren't mind readers...
