DVI to ADC, DVI to Mini Displayport Not Adding Up...

Hey Everyone,

I just bought a great looking Apple 17" LCD Studio Display off a friend to compliment my white Macbook (2011). He also gave me his Apple DVI to ADC converter-Great! After pouring over tons of discussions things don't seem to be adding up for me. Here's what I've pieced together so far:

In order to connect ADC to a mini displayport, you need the DVI to ADC Adapter. (✔)

Then, you connect the DVI to ADC adapter to a DVI to Mini Displayport Adapter and that connects to your Mac...

I haven't purchased a DVI to Mini Displayport Adapter because in looking closely at all the connections, the Mini Displayport Adapter is made for a DVI-D Dual Link connection, BUT, the DVI to ADC adapter is a DVI-D Single Link connection.

The difference being:

DVI-D Dual Link:

24-Pin connection

One continuous 8x3 section of pins

One straight line pin next to this set

Whereas,

DVI-D Single Link:

18-Pin connection

Two separated squares of 3x3 pins

One straight line pin next to this set

I haven't bought the Mini Displayport Adapter yet because I can see the obvious difference in pins, but I haven't heard different, maybe not all the pin holes need to be filled in and that is how it works, but as of right now the two just don't seem to fit together correctly.

Could someone please tell me if the two adapters do indeed work together, if I am just plain crazy, or if I am correct and if so, where can I find a DVI-D Single Link adapter for my macbook!

Thanks Ahead of Time!!! 🙂

You need only single-link DVI, so the cheap adapter will work.

Note: Many single-link DVI devices use dual-link DVI connectors although the extra pins are not connected, so you can't tell if something is dual-link just by looking at the connector.

Malcom,

Got it - that answers my question then. I just ordered one now, can't wait to get it up and running. Thanks for your help!

Side note, I meant to hit This solved my question but hit This helped me, any idea how to change that?

Did this work for you? I have the DVIator and mini display port to dvi but it didnt work. I researched and it said only apples will work, so I ordered that and am awaiting its arrival. So I have the mini display port to dvi to APPLE dvi to adc connection. Hopefully this should work.

Hey!

Yes, the above did work for me - I did in fact have the Apple version of the DVI to ADC adapapter and from there just ordered a cheap DVI to Mini Display Port Connection from a 3rd party off amazon and it all works great hooked up together. You're on the right track ordering the Apple DVI to ADC, I hope it all comes together for you!

Hi!

Im also interested in using a Apple 17" LCD Studio Display. Im planning on connecting it to my white macbook(2011) too. But I dont know if I'm willing to spend over $100 on the adc to dvi cord. My plan was to get that cord and then a dvi to minidisplayport and set it up. Do you know if a 3rd party adc to dvi cord would work? Such as this one:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812116204&nm_mc=KNC-Google Adwords&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-_-pla-_-NA-_-NA . The website claims that it is used for the purpose of connecting a studio display to a dvi, but Im not sure if only the apple one will work. Thanks!

So I'm going to need the Apple ADC to DVI cord, for the display.

It's not just a cord. It contains a power supply for the display and amplifiers for the DVI video signals.

Do you know if there is any alternative to paying more than a 100$ for a apple adc to dvi cord?

There are some for a bit less

Don't buy a non-Apple one. They may not work with a Mini DisplayPort adapter.

Oh ok thanks so its not just a converter but it hold the power also for the display. I am in the process of buying an Apple Adc to DVI adapter, but I just wanted to make sure that a 3rd party DVI to minidisplay port would work? Such as this one:http://www.amazon.com/feet-Mini-Displayport-Cable-White/dp/B003ES241I/ref=sr_1_2 ?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1347780435&sr=1-2&keywords=mini+displayport+to+dvi+ma le .

Because Im not sure if the ADC to minidisplayport offers DVI male or female?

Thanks for all the help!

You need an adapter with male Mini DisplayPort and female DVI, such as:

<http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB570Z/A/mini-displayport-to-dvi-adapter>

Do not get one with a long cable. The signals are already weaker than normal DVI and extra cable could cause problems.

The Apple DVI to ADC adapter is a box containing a power supply and female ADC, a detachable AC power cable with three prong plug, and a five foot cable with male USB and DVI-D connectors.

The USB is used for computer control of display brightness and for the USB ports on the display, (They are USB 1.1, not USB 2.0.)

Oh ok, but I thought the adc to dvi, was a female dvi... wouldnt that mean Id need a male dvi to mini display port.

Also, if I do in fact need the male mini displayport to female dvi, like you said would a 3rd part one work like it did with gbmurphy2190, such as this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812186191 .

( I am aware that this one is dual link, but you said above that it doesnt matter)

Thank You soo much! I was so lost before you helped me!

Oh ok, but I thought the adc to dvi, was a female dvi.

The Apple DVI to ADC adapter definitely has a male DVI connector (at the end of a permanently attached cable). I am using one now. Its DVI cable plugs directly into a female DVI port on my computer.

Also, if I do in fact need the male mini displayport to female dvi, like you said would a 3rd part one work like it did with gbmurphy2190, such as this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812186191 .

Yes.

( I am aware that this one is dual link, but you said above that it doesn't matter)

It is not dual-link, although it does use a dual-link DVI connector. Nowhere on that page does it say "dual-link". It does say:

"Supports Resolutions up to 1920x1200"

Dual-link would not have that limitation. Also dual-link would need USB for power.

Thank you so much!! This helped me a lot. I just have one more question although it might seem a bit off topic. After looking over the 17'' studio display a bit more I have decided to settle for the apple cinema display 20'', because it is much more affordable and in my opninion nicer. Before I get to buying anything I wanted to know if the cord with dvi and firewire and the usb(that usually plugs into the power brick) is permanent? Because a lot of the monitors for sale online, indicate that the power cords dont come with it; and I just wanted to know if the cord that has the dvi adapter on it is permanently attached into the monitor? This way I can just buy the monitor, and buy the power brick and ac cord seperately. Instead of searching for all the cords online. Thanks again!

I assume you are talking about the aluminum 20" display. It uses DVI, so you wouldn't need a DVI to ADC adapter.

<http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/CinemaDisplays_20_23_30inchUserGuide.pdf>

The display has a permanently attached cable with four plugs at the end:

FW400 - needed only for the FireWire ports on the display

USB - needed for the display's USB ports and for computer control of brightness

DVI-D - video

Power - plugs into the power adapter (24 VDC)

The power adapter has two sockets: 24 VDC and AC power. The AC power cord plugs into the power adapter.

You can use power adapters from larger displays if you want. e,g. use a 30" power adapter with a 20" display.
