I upgraded to the late4st software andmy iPhone 4 wouldn't sync proper;y - it returned an unknown error. I tried to restore the settings and it returned error code 3005. What does it mean and how can I sort this?

Codes in the 3000's mean that iTunes could not contact the activation server. If you ever used your computer to jailbreak or hack any iDevice (not just the phone with the problem) your hosts file is corrupted and you will have to clean it up. If you are sure this is not possible then try disabling your antivirus and firewall.

It doesn't matter when you installed antivirus software; if you have it on your computer it will frequently block access from applications to sites it does not know about. A sync does not require access to a site not on your computer; an upgrade clearly does. So if you have never jailbroken any device you do not need to be concerned about your hosts file, but you DO need to temporarily disable your antivirus during the update process.

The hosts file is an operating system file on all computers that overrides DNS lookup. In order to jailbreak or hack an iDevice the programs that do it need to redirect iTunes so it does not go to the Apple activation server, but instead goes to the hacking program for activation instructions. It does this by adding a record to the hosts file that bypasses the DNS lookup for gs.apple.com. But you don't have to be concerned about this.

I didn't need to do anything to my anti virus software. I knew that I hadn't tried to jailbreak my phone so it had to be something to do with my anti virus software. I started to have other issues and whilst exploring this I saw that McAfee was indicating a problem. I switched off my PC with the intention of sorting it in daylight hours when I had more time. The following day it had sorted itself!

The only thing I had done differently was to download the latest iTunes software and the latest update for my iPhone but sometimes McAfee does do one!
