Jul 6, 2012 4:35 PM in response to scofiertby jakeloveslucy,A solid amber light idicates that the devices is rebooting. It's normal to see that after a hard reset or factory reset. Allow up to 2 minutes for the device to power up and appear in Airport Utility.
If you are using Airport Utility 6.1, you will have to click the Other Airport Base Stations button on the top left of the window, and select the Airport Express which will take you through an assisted setup.
If you are using Airport Utility 5.5.3, the Airport Express will automaticall appear on the left side of the window. Select the device and click Continue on the bottom right and follow through the assisted setup.

Jul 6, 2012 4:37 PM in response to jakeloveslucyby jakeloveslucy,★HelpfulNow, I should add... if the light remains solid amber and does NOT change, you may try the factory reset. But, typically that would be a hardware issue.

Jul 6, 2012 4:44 PM in response to jakeloveslucyby scofiert, tried the factory reset but it's still staying solid amber and every now and then it flashes once green then back to solid amber and not picked up by utility, frustrating. I think I need to do a firmware update, seems like that was an issue when I purchased it. I'm not sure how to do that if it's not being recognized by my computer.

Jul 6, 2012 4:53 PM in response to scofiertby jakeloveslucy,★HelpfulThose symptoms are hardware related, I would recommend taking it to a local Apple Retail Store. If the Airport Express is within the first year of it's purchase date, it still has the limited hardware warranty. Otherwise, if you have a Mac computer, iPad, or Apple TV with AppleCare Protection Plan purchased within 2 years before or after the Airport Express it will also cover the hardware of your Airport Express.

Jul 6, 2012 4:56 PM in response to jakeloveslucyby scofiert,Thanks for your help. It's a 1st gen express, i have newer ipad but not under the protection plan so, I'm thinking the easiest thing is to get a new express. Unless there is a way to update the firmware outside the airport utility?

Jul 6, 2012 5:18 PM in response to scofiertby jakeloveslucy,There won't be, unfortunately. I work with these devices all the time.
Apple now has the new 2nd generation, for $99. You can also get the a refurbished 1st generation (includes full 1yr warranty) for $69.
