iTunes Store is nice and has provided on a limited basis the ability for multiple downloads. However, this isn't a guaranteed thing. They started doing it not long ago and the media rights owners could just as easily change the rules and stop it again. They can also pull individual items without warning.
Not all movies are available for multiple download. It depends upon the studio.
The bottom line is, the only way to guarantee you will have access to material in case your drive fails is to back it up yourself on a hard drive. Even that is not a 100% guarantee for movies because they require a computer be authorized for playback. Let's say Apple went broke tomorrow and closed up shop. No more computer authorization = no more playback. Unlikely but a limitation.
