I'm using iTunes 10.2.1.1 and have what I believe is a 2nd generation iPod. If you go to the "Summary" page in iTunes that lists details of the device, software version and options, under "Options" there is box that can be checked to "Manually manage music". Place a check in that box and you should be able to deselect songs from your library. Hope that helps!

Your info is correct for a 3rd or 4th gen shuffle (so you must have one of those). 🙂

A 1st or 2nd gen shuffle does not have a Summary tab. It has a Settings tabs instead. And a 1st or 2nd gen shuffle is designed to be in "Manually manage music" mode all the time; there is no automatic syncing (except for the "Autofill" feature). So there is no checkbox anywhere for Manually manage music.

But you are correct... If the shuffle is 3rd or 4th gen, setting it to Manually manage music would allow songs to be deleted directly from the shuffle's song list.
