Can I be charged sales tax in Vermont?

I've been trying hard to find out if apple.com can charge me sales tax when I live in Vermont! Two of their customer service reps confirmed there is NO store in the state of Vermont. Yet, they both told me I had to pay it for online orders. Neither could explain WHY. Anyone have any ideas how to solve this. I'd really like to order my new computer!

Don't forget that a state may also have "use tax". This means that if you make annual purchases over a certain amount (perhaps a couple of hundred dollars) you are supposed to pay state taxes on the items as part of your annual tax return statement. Details will likely vary by state.
