There's an even faster way, though it still won't get you the grid.
Just type the hotkey for spotlight (probably 'command-space' unless you've changed it), and type the first few letters of the app and hit return.
e.g. the sequence
'command-space' then type 'term' and hit 'return' will open Terminal faster than you can blink an eye!
