CDs not mounting on desktop

I just noticed today that cd's don't mount on my desktop. Dvd's mount just fine. The cd shows up as a volume in Disk Utility, but it is invisible on the desktop. I did the usual: repaired permissions, restarted, checked my preferences, etc. I also switched users, and the problem persists.

I have two other Hard Drives, one running 10.3.9, and the other one running Tiger. The Drive running Panther is a LaCie, and the other is the original internal 80 GB HD that came with my Mac. The newer drive is an ATA Hitachi 400GB drive. The problem does not happen on the other drives. What's especially perplexing is that the older drive is running the same version, udated, of Tiger as the drive (the Hitachi) that's having this problem.

Whenever I put a cd into the tray (and close it , of course) I get this message in the Console:

crashdump[273]: cddafs.util crashed

The software on both internal drives is identical, except that I have fewer apps on the newer drive, because I want to keep it fairly uncluttered.

Any ideas?

Thanks again, Niel. I am downloading it now, as I type this message. (And sorry I misspelled your user name before.)

Oh, and just in case it is of any help, the following is the crash log itself: Maybe someone can make sense of it for me. I don't know what all the code means.

The consloe itself shows this at startup:

Mar 19 10:56:02 daniel-elsters-power-mac-g5 diskarbitrationd[32]: SystemUIServer [88]:17415 not responding.

Also, a Spotlight search for cddafs.util shows only a location on my LaCie hard drive running panther. It doesn't show up in my current internal drives. However, I checked the system folder and sure enough, it is there, despite Spotlight not finding it.

Anyway, here's the crash log:

Niel:

I downloaded the Combo Update as you suggested and opened the package with Pacifist.

Mount_cddafs.8 was in the /System/usr/share/man/man8 folder, not the one you mentioned. That is different than the Mount_cddafs file, which is located in the sbin folder.

The cddafs file in /System/Library/Extensions/ is named cddafs.kext.

Are these the files you are referring to?

Another Update:

Tried unmounting and disconnecting the drive that's running Panther to see if there was a conflict that was causing the problem. Rebooted, and reinserted a cd. A warning window appeared that said the disk is not readable by this machine. Ejected the cd and reinsterted, but the dialogue did not reappear, but neither did the cd show on the desktop. In the meantime, disk utlilty still sees that it is mounted.

I am flummoxed.

This is no small issue. Not only do I use my system to listen to my music, but installations of programs from cds will be impossible.
