Problem: video files always needing rendering (FCE 4.0.1)

I use a Cannon 7D to import video files into FCE 4.0.1. But every clip has to be rendered before I can do any editing.

My items properties in QuickTime Player:

Frame size: 1920 x 1080

Vid Rate: 23.98fps

Compressor H.264

Audio rate: 48.0KHz

I'm working off files that are on a hard disk. Had no problem setting the scrtch files etc...

I did the easy set up with these setting:

Format: HD

Rate: 25:00fps

Use: AVCHD-Apple Intermediate Codec 1440 x 1080i50

Still my files needed rendering.

I tried to change the easy set up to

Format: HD

Rate: all rates

Use: AVCHD-Apple Intermediate Codec 1920 x 1080i60

But when I click save and then re-open the easy set up window, it reverts back to the first settings I did.

I am a complete novice with all this... so go easy on me :-)

Thank you in advance for your help!

FCE will only work with specific types of footage.

These are the choices you will find in the FCE>Easy Setups.

You firstly need to select an Easy Setup that matches your incoming footage.

If the incoming footage does not match any Easy Setups exactly, then, you will need to transcode the footage to a type that does match.

If you don't do this, FCE will try to conform the footage to make it fit the Sequence settings.

This means rendering and a RED render bar over the Timeline clips.

(Sequences are set by the Easy Setup). Only new Sequences are affected by change not existing ones. Start and Save a New Project to apply changes when the Easy Setup is altered.

Streamclip is a free App that can transcode the footage.

Always transcode to a Quicktime file that matches the FCE>Easy Setup you select.

In short: make sure the incoming footage matches the FCE Sequence rather than forcing FCE to conform wrong clips.
