How long does home sharing take to import songs into a new iTunes?

I have tried to use home sharing on iTunes to transfer songs from my old computer to my new one. So I tried to import the songs that way, but the speed at which they download is unbearably slow! Is this typical or just out of the ordinary? And are there any ways to import songs quicker than homesharing? Thanks please help!
