How best to help the Rev. ?

How best to help the Rev. ?

I have an aged friend hundreds of mile away, who uses a recent Mac Book Air on the same version of OSX as myself - 10.7.4.

I need to be able to help him by doing things on his computer like downloading and installing software, deleteing items, updating software - basically maintaining his system as if I were sitting beside it.

What is the best way of doing this without him having to make any complex settings at his end, apart form accepting my remote assistance, and preferably without him having to buy any expensive software.

Mac Mini 2011-OTHER, Mac OS X (10.7.4), iPad 2, Cube + iBook (10.5.8)

This appears to be an iPhone/iPad App.

I'd much prefer a computer to computer App. -- my Mac Mini to his Macbook Air.

LogMeIn's "Rescue" looks the correct thing for me but is impossibly expensive.

Screen sharing in iChat. LogMeIn is a complex third-party system modification that both you and your friend should avoid.

iChat no longer in OSX - replaced this Feb. by "Messages" - how can this be used for me to view and control a remote Mac ?

iChat is still part of the Mac OS, but it's removed if you install the Messages beta, which has its own discussion forum on this site. I suggest you post there.

And I have indeed installed the Messages-beta, which accounts for the absence of iChat.

I'll ask the relevant forum.

But if anyone else has other "remote" suggestions to make, do add to this discussion.
