MacBook Pro slow shutdown

I've been having slow shut downs on my MacBook Pro for a couple of years now, have just upgraded to the new MacBook Pro with Retina Display and still have slow shut down issues. It's not too major, but can take about 15 seconds to shut down.

Years ago I have a 13 Inch White MacBook and shutdown on that was pretty much instant, a second if that, even after 3 and a half years use and an almost full hard drive. I upgraded in 2010 to a 15 Inch MacBook Pro and thats when it all started, took around 15 seconds to shut down. I always use Migration Assistant when setting up my new Mac's and again did the same a few weeks ago when upgrading to my latest MBPr. My sister has recently had a MacBook Air and this shuts down instantly, so was wondering if there may be something causing my slow shut downs?

It may not be the end of the world but from having pretty much instant shut downs on all my previous Mac's going back 12 years to all of a sudden a couple of years ago having extended shut down times on the latest machine it seems a bit strange. I read somewhere about using Disk Utility to repair permissions which I've done but that hasn't changed anything. Anything else I can try?

My rMBP takes almost a full minute to shut down. I tried resetting the PMU and PRAM. I checked console/logs but could find nothing obvious running or erroring after the shutdown command. After three calls to Applecare, I took it into the Genius Bar today. They couldn't figure it out either. They are reinstalling the OS (10.8.1) and I'll pick it up tomorrow.

I wish my rMBP shut down in only 9 seconds. It still takes a minute or so. The Genius reinstalled the OS, but after one "normal" reboot, the laptop was back to s-l-o-w shutdowns. The Genius suggested that it was probably something related to Parallels, so I uninstalled it. No help. The only solution I've found is to run the maintenance scripts (I use Onyx for this), but after a few reboot cycles, it still returns to its slow behavior.

Whytang, you might try looking at the console during the time your machine is shutting down to see if any odd things were logged. Or, you can look in real time by booting in "verbose" mode (hold down Command-V while booting).

My current theory is some network component isn't releasing as it should, but I haven't been able to confirm this.

I had the same problem since updating to 10.8.. The networking Comment of Robert Weller1 made me think about the network stack..

I uninstalled the Wi-Fi adapter from my mac and rebooted. It was lots faster.. like 1 second to shut down

Re-Installed the Wi-Fi adapter and did a reboot again; now also just 1 second to shut down.

Now keeps shutting down fast..

This solved things for me.. good luck everyone!
