Installation Problem -- Oops!

I bought a new Mac some months ago. I finally decided it was time to install Aperture on it.

Dug out the disks (version 3). Tried to install, but the product key (the usual long combination of letters and numbers, not my Support ID) keeps getting rejected.

Here's the Oops! This was an upgrade from an earlier version, probably version 2. Someone told me that what I should have done was installed Version 2 and THEN installed the Version 3 upgrade. (The box, now that I look closely, says that you have to have the earlier version). But in a fit of spousally-inspired housekeeping a couple of months ago, I threw out the Version 2 box and discs.

Is there something I can do? Or just live with iPhoto, or buy a fresh copy sometime? I'm obviously in no tearing rush, but it would be nice ...

Lofty,

you do not need the the Version 2 installer, but you do need the Version 2 serial number written on the box (or the leaflet inside the box).

What you can do, is contact Apple with a proof of purchase and ask for a replacement serial number, see these links as to what is considered to be a proof of purchase:

Pro Application Replacement Serial Numbers: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1861

Troubleshooting Professional Application Serial Numbers:

Aperture now can work with iPhoto Libraries, so any work you do in iPhoto while waiting for Aperture 4 will not be lost. Aperture 4 is overdue, so I would not recommend this to be a good time to buy Aperture 3 a second time 😉
