Aperture 3.3: Missing referenced images not being recognised as referenced images.

I have many images with a yellow warning triangle badge which I assume means that the referenced original cannot be found.

When I do something like "Update from Original" I get the error message "Unavailable original images cannot be updated. The selected original image is either offline or not found. Please reconnect it and try again."

OK - so I choose "Locate Referenced Files" from the menu - then get another error message - "No Referenced Files - The selection doesn’t have any referenced files."

How can an image be not found (yellow warning triangle badge) and also not be a referenced image?

Many Thanks,

Ifor.

Have a look inside your Aperture Library, if your images are still there:

Ctrl-click the Aperture Library and select "Show Package Contents" from the pop-up menu.

This will open a Finder window that lets you inspect the library files. Open the folder "Masters" and see, if your missing master iages are still there. The "Masters" folder is organized by "import session", not capture date.

If your masters/originals are still there, this may be a permissions issue and you could try to repair the permissions or the library with the first aid tools:

Launch Aperture with the key combination opt-cmd (⌥⌘) held down; the select "Repair permissions" from the first aid panel. If this does not help, try "Repair Database", and if all fails "Rebuild Database". I'd recommend to make a backup before trying the rebuild.

Hi Léonie,

Thank you for the rapid reply.

The images are not in the Aperture Library. When I open up the package content, they are not there. I search for them using the finder search and also look in the Masters folder hierarchy at at the appropriate dates - and they are definately not there.

I would not expect them to be in the Aperture Library because at some point in the past I exported them to become referenced files. I know exacty where they are - but cannot persuade Aperture to launch the "Locate Referenced Files.." facility as it comes up with the "No Referenced Files - The selection doesn’t have any referenced files." error.

I have repaired the premissions - with no luck.

I will try and repair the database and possibly rebuld it too to see of that helps.

If all else fails - I can import the pictures again (as referenced files), but will lose all the edits.

Did you not use the "relocate" command? If you not used to Aperture to move the masters/originals, you need to movet them back inside the Aperture library exactly where they came from.

If all else fails - I can import the pictures again (as referenced files), but will lose all the edits.

After reimporting you can use the "Lift & Stamp" tool to copy the edits to the reimported images.
