Q: Spreadsheet text span

Hello...

I am working on a form in AppleWorks 6.2.9 Spreadsheet that I want to enter text in. In Excel, I would merge several cells across and I could type in some text, and it would span across those merged cells. I am trying to do the same thing in AppleWorks with no luck. I type in several words, and only one will appear in a single cell and the other words are hidden.

So, the question is, how can I do this in AppleWorks?

Thanks.

Not sure why you're having a problem with this - it works automatically for me and I don't see any preference setting to change it:

    Thanks Roger,

That's just the thing, there is nothing adjacent to the cell I'm typing in.

It does like your row 2 with an empty cell to the right.

    Any thoughts?

    Figured it out...

I highlighted all the cells and selected from the menu bar "Format" then "Alignment" then checked "General". Then it worked. It was checked "Left" alignment previously.

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Paul,

I'm not sure why that's making a difference in your case. The four examples below show what should happen using text and the four alignment choices available:

    Picture 6.png

"General" alignment makes the alignment depend on the content being recognized as a Number (aligned right) or as Text (aligned left).

From youe description, I suspect the problem was that you had Wrap turned on, as shown in the image below of the same table as above.

    Picture 7.png

Cel content and alignment are the same as described above, with the exception that the "Wrap" option has been checked in the Format menu for each of the cells displaying content.

    Regards,

    Barry

    Hey Barry,

    Thanks for the screen shots.

It's possible that the wrap option was checked, but I think It's possible it had to do with the original formatting. The spreadsheet was originally designed in Excel, and I converted it to Appleworks 6. The formatting was a little off, but overall, it needed little tweaking.

It's fine for now, so thank you for your explanation.

Also, thank you Roger Wilmut as well.
