Video on my 1st generation Apple TV streamed from iTunes and Youtube has magenta and green splotches mixed in with the screen image - very poor reception with my HDMI cable connection. This problem just suddenly came on, after years of working perfectly. How do I trouble shoot this?

Thank you, Winston, for your prompt response. I took the device to the Apple Genius Bar, and after hooking it up they couldn't reproduce the problem -- it worked perfectly for them. So I am back to trouble shooting my connections, as well as my network settings, etc. Does anyone make house calls in the West Los Angeles area???? I'm stumped.

Yes, I had the exact same problem when I hooked it up again at home.
And did that occur immediately or begin after a period of time.
Immediately.
I am 100% sure, it is nothing to do with your network or the content that you are playing. Did you use the same HDMI cable when you took it to the Apple Store to be tested.
No, they used their own cable. I am going to get a new HDMI cable and see if that solves the problem. Thanks, Winston for helping me zero in on the problem. Hopefully a new cable wil fix it! Signing off for now.
