iChat is not working after uninstalling iMessage beta

Hey all.

When the iMessage beta was available I installed it. After several uses I decided I didn't like it and re-installed iChat.

Now the iChat does not work at all.

My buddies do not stay in the list and are always listed as Offline eventhough I know they are available for chats.

I took my Macbook pro to the Genius Bar where we re-installed everything but no luck.

I can now only chat from my ipod touch but I'd like to use my macbook for chats too.

How can this problem be fixed?

Thanks for your input.

HI,

So you have iChat 6 reinstalled.

Can you go to the Application folder and highlight it.

Then do a "Get Info" (See Finder > File Menu)

In the Info Panel that shows up is iChat at version 6.0.1 ? (It will be near the top)

Did the Genius do a Lion Restore ?

Does iChat Launch ?

Are the Preferences greyed out in the iChat Menu ?

If you use the Window menu are any Accounts listed as being Logged in ?

AS iChat and Messages use the com.apple.ichat.plist I would think that it contains references to Messages that should have been removed.

It may be that removing the said .plist and restarting it (which will recreate it from defaults) may "Cure" the issue.

Hi Ralph,

The version is: 6.0.2.

I don't know if the Genius did a Lion restore. How do I find out?

Yes, iChat launches.

Other folks can ask to friend me via chat but I don't do that.

No, the Preferences are not greyed out in the ichat menu.

Excuse my ignorance but what is the "If you use the Window menu are any Accounts listed as being Logged in ?"

How do I remove the .plist?

Thanks for ur help!

Hi,

One is looking in the wrong place.

There are three folders called "Library"

The one in Hard Drive > Library

The one in Hard Drive > System > Library

And the Hidden one if you are using Lion in Hard Driver > Users > (Your account/Little House iCon) > Library.

This Hidden one can be seen if you use the Finder > Go Menu and then Hold the ALT key to see the Library get added to the list.

Then you can open Preferences.

iChat can send Messages (IMs or Instant Messages) to valid AIM Names or to Jabber IDs

It cannot send iMessages like Messages Beta can or the iPod Touch can with the iOS 5 messages app.

The OS can be reinstalled several ways.

One is to use the Lion restore option which mean starting the computer holding down the CMD and R at Start up then choosing the "Recovery" Drive.

There is a USB Memory stick drive that can be purchased and I would not be surprised if the Stores made use of this.

I would also think that Apple may provide the Stores with DVDs that can install the OS.

I was hoping that you either saw the process or the Chap told you which method was being used.

Hi,

There is no way to tell which way the OS was installed.

Ding Dong!

I found it.

Should I delete both of the com.apple.iChat.plist (lockfile) files?

Thanks.

I'm thinking, thinking thinking trying to re-create what the Genius did. We backed up everything, re-formatted drive OH - I think we re-installed from my external drive??? I can't remember. Too much water under the bridge. That was apporx. 2 mos. ago.

HI,

You don't need to worry about the .lockfile ones.

If you took along a Time Machine backup the Genius could have used that to reinstall.

The only issue with this is that the last Back-up is likely to have contained the issues the reinstall was supposed to sort out.

I would tend not to worry about this too much. If we don't know, we just don't know.

Hi,

We now whack the thing with the proverbial bat. 😁

Go to the Applications Folder and then the Utilities one inside and open Activity Monitor

Find IMAgent in the List.

Highlight and use the Quit icon top left and confirm a Force Quit.

It will bounce back almost immediately.

Restart Messages.

Hi,

If this is a AIM Buddy list you use access the Preferences folder again and delete (Drag to Trash) the com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist (Don't worry about the .lockfile)

Restart iChat.

If it is a Google name or other Jabber ID then delete com.apple.ichat.Jabber.plist and then restart iChat.

It is late where I am and it will be several hours (closer to 20 than anything else) before I am back (Sleep, work, some eating)
