Well, do you mean by completely erasaing everything off your ipod or just rebooting it? If you wan to erase everything off of it, go to Settings, then General, then scroll all the way down and tap Reset. Then go to the option that you would like.
If you just want to reboot your iPod, then hold down on the power off button and the home button simultaneously for 15 seconds. Your screen should turn off. Then hold just the power button until the Apple logo appears. You should have rebooted your IPod.
If you are going to erase everything off your iPod, I suggest that you don't back it up if it has a problem.

If it's locked, you will have to reset off iTunes. But you cannot reset your iPod without updating the software. It takes about 55 minutes to do this. Go to your device in iTunes, and scroll down until you see the buttons Restore and Update. You click restore, and it will tell you the rest of the procedure.
