Altec iML247 USB speakers not working. Suggestions anyone?

I purchased Altec iML247 USB speakers to use with my MacBook Pro. They are plugged into the USB outlet but no sound. The red light at the top of the speakers is on, so am I leaving something undone? Suggestions anyone?
