Q: qadministrator asking for passwords

OK, long story, compressor 4, I'm on 10.6.8, set up a cluster WITHOUT ANY PASSWORDS but  when I try to administer cluster qadministrator has set an admin and user password??? I didn't set any passwords at all, I'm the only one in my studio. I can't get past this at all.

Trawled the posts and found d 'similar' posts but not the same, I'm  getting fried looking for an answer. Anyone got a clue

Mac OS X (10.6.8), Mac Pro 10.6.8

I haven't done a search but I believe some users who had similar issues solved them by repairing permissions in Disk Ultility and/or trashing preferences. Try DIgital Rebellion's tool.

    Good luck.

Thanks, tried all those like everyone else, seems it's been a common problem with lots of red herrings suggested as the culprit. I haven't found an answer yet.

Have you tried changing the passwords in the Security pane?

Hi Russ, I haven't set any passwords at all. they are blank and I thought of setting a password to see if that would make a difference but it asked me for a password before it would let me submit a password ???

Not surprised. It was a bit of a hail Mary pass. Just double-checking…you have repaired permissions in Disk Utilities, right?

If so,I think you're looking at reinstallingg Compressor/Qmaster, which really isn't all that problematic. Here is a link to Apple's troubleshooting steps and in it they explain how to delete the Compressor-related files.

    Good luck.

OH I hate re-installing anything on this FCP suite, I have bad dreams at night of icons bouncing in the dock and I'm on a deadline. And compressor is back to '3x host crash' where one instance fails. I'd had a week of this 'mare', and I was passing jobs onto compressor 4 on another volume to get back to work, then comprerssor 3.? miraculously cured itself and now is back to the 3x host crash . Wish I had a hardware encoder because despite us all being a few years now firmly in Bluray land and me knocking my self silly learning how to author blurays no-one has asked me for one yet, so i'm still shooting gorgeous HDV with superb colour and detail and dumbing it down to DVDs

Underrstand the reluctance but I if  Compressor Repair and Apple's troubleshooting steps didn't do it, I think your options are to re-install or do that Compressor 3 work-around.

To uninstall, you can download FSCRemover…it works with Compressor 4 (although I have never used to remove C4).

Good luck. Let us know how it works out for you.

Thanks Russ, but the uninstall is a minefield, been down that route before and would rather use Timecapsule to revert the whole boot disc than uninstal and reinstal FCP. Might actually do that.

Not to belabor the point, but why do you need to re-install anything other than Compressor? We're still talking C4…right?

No, the one that's acting up is 3.5 on my main boot drive where I have FCP suite installed. Been using FCP since version 1 and stumbled through all the uninstal reinstal  glitches over the years, with DVDSP and Compressor always throwing up some glitch or other and then icons bouncing in  the dock, then trawling the boards for workarounds etc. and of course 'cannot connect to background process'. I spent SO much time over the years troubleshooting this whole suite and now that its at the end of the road when I get it all working sweet I timecapsule the whole disc.

I've got version 4 on the other volume with FCPX installed, it's not much different, but it's a drag working in FCP on one volume, exporting my prores master and restarting and firing up compressor 4 on another volume. Definitely not installing FCPX and compressor 4 on the same volume as FCP studio 3, think thats asking for trouble.

Hi Peter.  Never had that with selective installs. But you know the idiocyncacies of your system a lot better than I ever could. In case you ever want to – or are forced to – put FCS and the new apps on a single, non-partioned drive, the Legacy apps should get installed first, then the new versions (X, M5, C4) downloaded. Over thepast year, two machines, two FCS versions, all the "new pro app" downloads and updates, three OSX versions, 2 clusters here and no problems that I can attribute to conflicts. YMMV.

    Good luck.

QuickClusters "pretend" to have a password but don't actually...they just lock you out from customizing them that way. If you switch to a cluster you manage yourself you can set your own password etc. QuickClusters also put up a "shared" volume on your desktop...don't eject that if you want things to work right.

At least this is what I've found so far.

i can't see the shared volume created by the quick clusters. Compressor is horrible. I managed to get one processing done over the network and it never worked again due to the locked services, asking for passwords. Has anyone used this reliably?
