Thunderbolt is MDP on MBPs. they are one in the same port. You can also connect a TB HDD to it then a display to the external HDD and have both connected at the same time, daisy chained (Display always needs to the last device in the chain).

So, the "real" question is what do you mean by "it detects the display"? I mean, what makes you think it detects anything?

Also i have questions about the following that you mentioned - However, although my new MBP can detect the display, the monitor does not switch on and there is no sign of life. <--- is your 23 Cinema HD display plugged into power / Magsafe ??
