Why can't my MacBook open .Jar files?

This may be simplified for most, but I thought I'd post for anyone else who's problem was not fixed with the above.

I received this message when I was trying to open a .jar file that was not an executable file. It was a plugin for a particular program. Therefore, the fix was to transfer the .jar file into the plugins folder of the program it was going to be used for. Then, after restarting the program, the plugin was installed and usable.

The problem is Java is barely functional on 10.5.8 anymore thanks to the Flash malware:

Speak to the developer in question and ask them to rewrite their program so it can function on Macs patched for the malware.

I am having the same problem -

I’m trying to install this “copious dogs” mod on my work computer (MacBook Pro).

I can’t open the JAR file. I get an error message saying “Copious dogs … cannot be launched. Check the Console for possible errors …”

I’ve been on all kinds of boards that tell me to install a bunch of Java apps and whatnot. None of that has worked.

I’ve found other boards that say to open the .jar file with my archive utility. I can do that and get to a “cpgz” file. But then when I try to open that I get another .jar file – which I can’t open.

Other boards say to go to the apple store and download “Unarchiver.”

But when I go to the mac store and search for “unarchiver” I’m taken to a “Dashboard Widgets: iPhone News” download – and that’s about when I start to pull my hair out and give up.

What am I doing wrong ?

I'm having this issue as well. This is an old post, but where is Java preferences? I can't find it. I read somewhere that they got rid of it, any ideas?

So heres a solution I found. Ill use the example of Something.jar

So its really simple. Rename the file to Something.zip

Then try to open it. It'll work like a charm
