why doesn't cmd-rtn work

I want to use cmd-rtn to insert a new page in Pages (08). Nothing happens when I type the keystroke.

Any ideas?

OK, let me add to the original post. Under Pages Help there is a Keyboard Shortcuts tab. About a third of the way down the list it says "insert page break.......Command-Enter". Since I use Return and Enter interchangeably, I didn't think twice when I tried Command-Return and it didn't work.

I tried Command-Enter and it did work. So, I stumbled on my own solutions. The path in Lion to making your own shortcuts is a little different from what bwfromspring hill describes. It is

Preferences/Keyboard/Keyboard Shortcuts/Application Shortcuts/[+ at the bottom]

then pull down Applications and select iWork/Pages. Fill in the menu title = Page Break, and type Cmd-Rtn.

Shut down Pages, then restart. Look under the Insert menu and there is Cmd-Rtn on the right. And it works!

All this is odd. Why aren't the Help shortcuts shown in the menus? Why isn't there a Customize menu within Pages to let you add shortcuts right there? All a little odd, but at least it works.

I looked through the menus and help files for Pages '09 (Pages '08 has been revised) and find no reference to a CMD-Return keystroke shortcut to insert a new page. Here are instruction for creating keyboard shortcuts (from the OSX Help File on any Mac):

  1. 1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Keyboard.
  2. 2. Click Keyboard Shortcuts, and then click Add (+).
  3. 3. Choose an application from the Application pop-up menu. If you want to set the same key combination for a menu command that appears in many applications, choose All Applications. If the application you want to select does not appear in the list, choose Other and locate the application using the Open dialog. Some applications may not allow you to set keyboard shortcuts.
  4. 4. Type the menu command for which you want to set a keyboard shortcut in the Menu Title field. You must type the command exactly as it appears in the application menu, including ellipses and any other punctuation. An ellipsis is a special character that looks like three periods. To type an ellipsis, press Option-semicolon, or use the Character Viewer. It may be difficult to know whether the command is written in the menu with a real ellipsis or with three periods, so if one does not work, try the other.
  5. 5. Click in the Keyboard Shortcut field and press the key combination that you want to assign to the menu command, and then click Add.You cannot use each type of key (for example, a letter key) more than once in a key combination.
  6. 6. Quit the application for which you added or changed a keyboard shortcut.
  7. 7. Restart the application to see the keyboard shortcut in the application’s menu.

That should do it, but if youd like to let Apple know that you think there should be such a shortcut, leave some feedback - in Pages > Provide Feedback

Good luck.

I do not have a numeric keyboard. My return and enter key are one and the same and both words are printed on the key. I am using Pages '09. Command-Enter does not insert a page break. fn-enter does and unlike other posts I've read, it only inserts one page break, not two. In other words, fn-enter does exactly what I want it to do which is insert a page break using a simple keystroke. The Pages help menu and list of keyboard shortcuts lists command-enter as the correct keystroke to insert a page break but it DOES NOT WORK on my keyboard. fn-enter DOES WORK. I hope this helps other users.

Command + enter works without the function key, but the enter key is on the numeric keyboard; Return is not the same as enter (although many programs map both keystrokes to the same function). Function + return produces the enter keystroke in any application.

Hi Jeff,

Keyboards on MBPro do not have an enter key. The return key has an additional label—enter—in smaller letters than return. Similar in appearance to the option/alt key labeling, but functionally different, apparently. Option, I suspect sends the same code without regard to the position of the fn key, and the extra lable is there to aid those switching from other systems to recognize this as a 'similar' key to what they're used to. Return (on a keyboard without an enter key) sends an enter (or a modified enter) when used with fn.

On an iMac, running Leopard, and with the Apple extended kb and Pages '09 v4.0.5, command-return, fn-return and fn-enter each insert a page break; command-return has no visible effect, return and enter each insert a paragraph break (aka carriage return), and shift-return and shift-enter insert a 'line break' (line feed/soft return).

Regards,

Barry
