My 4yo Macbook Pro laptop makes a horrible grinding noise whenever I use it to upload files to the internet.
I can easily overwork it and get it pretty hot without a sound, but when I upoad...
Any ideas as to what it might be?

It might be a HDD on the way out, or your fans could be full of dust and are clogged.
If you have some tech skills, you might want to disassemble the MBP and blow all the gunk out.
You can try a SMC, or take a trip to the Apple service center.

I was thinking the same thing but hoping I was wrong.
