The instructions are in this kb article.

Creating an iTunes Store, App Store and iBookstore and Mac App Store account without a credit card.

The key to this is that you MUST try download a free app first and then create the account from the resulting window that pops up asking if you already have an iTunes account.

Once you have created an account, there is no way to select "None" as the option. By that time, you have to enter a credit card, have it verified by Apple, then subsequently remove it.

If you already set up an Apple ID - and you don't care if you have two ID's - sign out of the ID that you created in Settings>Store>Apple ID. Then try to download a free app and see if the process will work for you and let you create an account without the credit card.

The 4 steps from Chris Bainchi in prior post works like a charm. 🙂 He outlined the steps for ipads however it works identically for the iphone as well.

It's unforutnate that Chris had to stumble across this. However, glad he did as we are all able to benefit from it.

Apple should make this information readily available for individuals like me who want to set up itunes accounts on our kid's iphones and ipads so they can download free apps without the need for a credit card...

Great job Chris!! I just finished spending the last 24hrs trying to figure out how to get this "none" option to show up.

I hope someone at Apple realizes just how annoying this whole situation is. Seriously, what's the deal with not being able to bypass the credit card requirement unless it's a full moon, during the height of the summer equinox, while standing on your head, etc. Why can't you just bypass this requirement REGARDLESS of how the account is being set up.

I can't begin to tell you how much trouble this whole bit of nonsense is causing for our MDM rollout.

You will get the 'none' option if you follow the instructions on this page when creating a new account : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2534

If you don't use those instructions then credit card details will need to be entered before the account can be used to download any item from the store.

You could see if this post by mountaingoatgirl lets you review your account without needing to enter credit card details : https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5295285?answerId=24303054022#24303054022

If not (and if you don't have or don't want to enter credit card details) then you will need to create a new account, and this time use the instructions on that HT2534 page when creating it. If you want to use the same email address then you will need to replace it on that account first e.g. by tapping on it in Settings > iTunes & App Store on your iPad, via the Store > View Account menu option on your computer's iTunes or via http://appleid.apple.com

Creating an account with 'none' via a computer's iTunes : https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5729572?answerId=24321860022#24321860022
