Try blowing on the jack with compressed air and quickly inserting/removing your headphones multiple times to clear it.
If you can't change the volume on your alerts go to Settings>Sounds and make sure Change with Buttons is set to On. Then you should be able to change the volume with the buttons on the side of the phone.

Jul 9, 2012 7:28 PM in response to randers4by cknrvz85,I tried to do that. It is still not working. If I have it on a speaker set or have my headphones in it works fine. I turned my "Change with buttons" setting on and off and it is still not working. I don't know what to do about it.

Jul 9, 2012 7:30 PM in response to cknrvz85by randers4,Did you check to make sure you didn't flip the mute switch on the side of the phone?

Jul 9, 2012 8:12 PM in response to randers4by cknrvz85,As if that wasn't something I thought of on my own, YES. I checked it thousands of times. I turned the mute on and off also. I even turned the power off and on thousands of times. Still nothing. I used a vaccuum cleaner to get any debris out. I turned the "Change with Buttons" option on and off thousands of times. I restored my phone, updated it, turned it off and on again. I tried it with headphones and with a speakers system and without. It works fine with headphones and with a speaker system attached, but it acts as if it is still attached to either headphones or a speaker system when I remove it from either of them. My ringtones work, but it only vibrates when you test out the voicemail, text, and email tones, even with the mute off. I even removed it from my protective covering to do these things. I have. no. idea. what do to. next. I believe I have thought of everything. Can you think of anything else? I am sorry to be rude. I am very frustrated and feel as if my intelligence is being questioned in the process.

At any rate, it's possible that you have a hardware problem such as your headphone sensor has failed causing the phone to think that your headphones are always inserted. The best course of action at this point is to make an appointment at the genius bar at a nearby Apple store to have the phone examined and if necessary replaced. Before going, sync your phone with iTunes to create a new backup. Also import your photos and videos to your computer (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083) and back up your contacts separately from your iPhone backup, such as by syncing them with iCloud (Settings>iCloud>Contacts>On).
