My iphoto library disappeared after I was having trouble with Skype. I emptied my trash and cleaned out my history and now I have NO photos or
videos of my grandchildren from the last 8 years. HELP!!!

Look in your Pictures folder. Do you see a file named iPhoto Library?
If you don't, try searching via the File menu, Find ... and specify
iPhoto Library
for the name of the file (you can select name of file, or contents of file etc.).
You emptied your rtash but it doesn't make sense that you might have put the iPhoto Library file in the trash first.
When you open iPhoto, you can specify the name of the iPhoto Library file by holding down the option key when you start up iPhoto, but you have to find that iPhoto Library file first.

sounds like you deleted it - as to where it is only yoou can find it - steve's suggestions are good - especially the option-launch and using the select library option
However it sounds very likely that your solution will be to load your backup of the iPhoto library from before making this mistake (which is of course whay you must always have a backup = people, computers and software all fail and a good backup is the only protection against those failures)

Thanks. All sounds like good ideas, however, I do have a backup on Time Machine which I checked is working perfectly. The iphoto library is completely empty. I would have had no reason to delete it or move it to the trash.
any other ideas before I haul this thing to the "genius" counter at the apple store?
When depress the option key and launch iPhoto and use the select library command how many iPhoto libraries do you see?

IPHOTO After the last up date is acting weird, I lost my library 4 times in last than one week ... You don't do anything wrong, is the program which is not really good... No one is doing anything to it... If you go online to see IPhoto to buy You will see how many complains has there ! I put 2 days to organize again all my pictures. And is a waist of time... because I am sure will desapear again without reason !!!!

@Nanabiz. Very, very, very unlikely that iPhoto is losing your library. It has no capability to delete a library. The most common cause is user error. An easy solution is to restore your backup

If you say so... Please just pass by all the complains IPHOTO is having on the Apple Store ... I am not the only one ... No only it , but have a lot of problems include be slow, don't download and Oh my !!! It is a huge list of it ! But if you said is user faut ... Means nothing can be done !

You keep saying to restore the backup. If it is not on the backup, how do we restore it. I used iPhoto yesterday and 2 hours later, it was gone! I have gone back to my backups 1 day ago, a week ago etc. and it doesn't exist.
Obviously if it is not on the backup you can not resotore it
What backup system are you using? Is the iPhoto library being backed up? do you quit iPhoto when you are not using it? (Some backup programs - Time Machine for example - do not backup teh iPhoto library when it is open)

That is a very specific correct statement about a specific problem
If you have a huge list of issues try asking questions about them rather than just RANTING - it is likely that your list of problems has a list of very simple solutions

Mine disappeared as well. I an fairly new to a Mac but 15,000 photos are gone. Fortunately I have most on my pc before the transfer. I did install picasa and maybe that has something to do with it. I was at genius bar last night, and going back today.
i used to like iphoto. but since the last update it has turned into a piece of crap. I have lost the photos in my lirary four times now and I.m tire of rebuilding it. Maybe it is time to go back to a PC at least there I can eaisly find the file and rebuild it!
Did you have a question? It's pretty obvious that if you have lost the photos in your Library four times then something is either versy seriously wrong on your machine, or you're doing something very wrong. As to going back to PC, if that's what you think is best. But there's no need. If you can't grasp iPhoto then don't use it. Saving files in folders is equally possible - and equally limited - on Macs as Windows.

My opinion is : If you feel confortable with a PC or a MAc, is up you to decide... and You are free to do it. Wrong or not... I don't know if we can see as right or wrong...
I had update once more iphoto, the latest update... Still open slowly ... but , it is a little better !
