torrent questionfor itunes

I want to put music files downloaded from bit torrent sites onto an ipod so I can listen in the car. When I try to put into itunes they appear with a little wifi icon. Then when I synch it says "these files are ineligible for icloud". They are large files but so larger than many albums. Is itunes only for CDs or can music be downloaded from music download sites as well? Any help would be much appreciated.

You don't even mention this but I take it you have Match? I don't have Match so I can't speak from experience here.

You apparently can add the files to iTunes so it would seem they are in a compatible format that far. I don't know if Match has a length limit to tracks (but it would not surprise me if it did). You say they are large files but no longer than an album. Are they individual files of a length normally represented by multiple files making up an album? There are other limits such as lower bitrate or a file that may have DRM protection. Do the files play in iTunes?

I am not familiar with this wi-fi icon. Could these be links to streaming sources like Internet radio?

VBR isn't the file format. It stands for variable bitrate which is a feature of the encoding used in several file types. You're looking for something like AAC, MP3, m4a, etc.

Just an aside, bittorrent sites aren't always the most reliable source of music, either technically or legally. Even if the file format is one iTunes can use, the encoders used may be introducing non-standard elements in the files that are causing the problems.

Thanks. At first I was worried about legality but I am downloading Grateful Dead shows from archive sites that are definitely legal. Even the Grateful Dead website talks about open source taping and sharing the music, etc, etc. It's easy to listen to shows on the archive...some download with no trouble at all, others seem to stay in the cloud. The ones in the cloud seem to need internet connection to listen to. But I did see an MP3 link so I will try that. Thanks.
