Jul 10, 2012 6:27 AM in response to KY Sueby Allan Eckert,Replace the battery first.
Depending on the speed of the processor either 10.4 or 10.5. Either one of those DVDs is probably going to be expensive seeing as how Apple has stopped producing both of them. Don't purchase the gray machine specific DVDs. They will only work on the hardware they were made to boot. Get the generic version.
You are biggest problem will be find old software that is able to run on that old of an operating system.

Jul 10, 2012 7:16 PM in response to KY Sueby MichelPM,★HelpfulWith the age of your Mac, you can really only run OS X 10.4 Tiger.
Your Mac won't meet the minimum CPU needed for OS X 10.5 Leopard.
You can install a max of 1.0 GB of RAM into this Mac.
Here's alink to a site for purchasing OS X Tiger.
Not sure if your Mac has a CD/DVD combo drive
Tiger came in either DVD or CD format.

If your Mac can read DVDs, then you could install this version.

Jul 10, 2012 9:59 PM in response to KY Sueby BDAqua,Leopard requirements/10.5.x...
* Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
minimum system requirements
* 512MB of memory (I say 1.5GB for PPC at least, 2-3GB minimum for IntelMacs)
* DVD drive for installation
* 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
Trouble is Apple no longer sells it, check eBay & such for the Retail version, not the Gray Discs...

You have to call Apple & likely ask for a Product Specialist to get it, if they still have it! Helps to tell them you have an iPad/iPhone & you can't run 10.6.
There are workarounds if the 867MHz CPU is the only hangup, (not Bus Speed)…
