how to exit recovery mode - HELP!!!

Big problem with my iPhone 4 (Verizon). I tried to update to ios 5.1.1 and it said "unexpected error occurred" and put the phone into recovery mode.

I do not want to restore because I will lose 1000+ photos and other data.

Is there any way to get around this problem? Is there at least a way to retrieve my photos? Some are in the Photo album but many are in my Camera+ app.

Please help!

iPhone 4, iOS 5.0.1

Bull. If you back up to your computer, it backs up automatically every time you sync. If you back up to iCloud, it backs up every night if it's connected to power and a WiFi network with Internet access. The camera roll is intended to be temporary storage for photos, just like on any other digital camera.

I'm willing to bet money that you've never backed up your computer either.

I back up all the time. But I just happened to take a trip and take a lot of photos. Now I sit down to sync and iPhoto wouldn't recognize my phone. And iTunes kept asking me to update. So I did the update and received an error message which has never happened with my 3 iphones.

Well, the situation is what it is.

You didn't back up your data. The phone is in recovery mode. Anything that was on it is gone.

That said, if you used the computer you had your phone set up to sync with to update it, it 'should' have backed it up immediately before attempting to update it, unless you ignored or didn't tell us about a failure notice you got when you told it to update.

Once it's in recovery mode, the only thing you can do is restore. There is no magic that will reverse what's already happened.

That's actually not correct. It doesn't backup automatically everytime you sync. That's a common misconception. Want proof? Sync, wait for it to say "backing up" and then check under device preferences. You'd be surprised at how many times no backup is listed.

OP - You're stuck, kid. Once in recovery mode you can't get out. Should've have been more careful, but you have nobody to blame but yourself.
