Q: If I install Leopard 10.5 will I lose my Os 9.2.2?

Hi,

I have a 466 Mhz Power Pc G4, 1.5 GB of SDRAM..running 10.4.11. I love it!

1) What I am faced with is losing my OS 9.2.2 if I install Leopard 10.5..I have Dreamweaver Ultra Dev for OS 9 and I use it everyday for my websites, will I lose my Os9?

2) I am on a fixed income (on purpose) so I know I will never buy an Intel Mac..sad but true I guess. It seems my PPC just won't go the distance with the internet, with no flash support or any new apps or software. I am still seeing flash videos on my Firefox 3.6.28 since I upgraded my Adobe flash to the highest they would offer Flash Player 10.1.102.64 , but I'm sure someday my version of Firefox will just go extinct.I'm using Adblock on Firefox to save memory and I downloaded TenForFox- My Safari is really doing well also.

How many tweaks can I keep doing to keep up..the alternatives are quickly vanishing. Shame on Apple for doing this to us loyalists.

Should I migrate to a Linux system? And just learn a new website editor program? like Kompozer?

Thanks-LionInSunHeart-Arizona

Yes, technology moves in strange directions!  I was gifted the Palm VII back in 2000 and enjoyed it quite a bit until Palm killed their wireless plan.

And Claris:  I LOVED Claris Emailer until OS X killed it (I may have ran it in Classic mode, too, but I can't recall at this point).  It was the only Mac software that would work with America OnLine's proprietary email at that point and I always hated AOL's email software.  Luckily for me, by that time, AOL had acquired Netscape, and the Netscape's browser would work with AOL email.  Ultimately, of course, America OnLine opened their email up to IMAP standards.  Being a charter subscriber, I still use that as my primary email and it's nickname has become my internet alter ego, too!

Have your niece redouble her efforts and be sure she searches for the phrase I gave you; she may be attempting to download the wrong one.  As a kid, I always enjoyed going to Disneyland and riding Pirates of the Carribean.  Ask your niece if she enjoins that ride.  I just took the ride again and it took all of 5 minutes to complete.  I guess old habits are hard to break...

In your case you can easily be a legitimate user of SheepShaver:  you already own a copy of OS 9 and the emaculation link I posted earlier describes two options for obtaining Mac ROMs - either extract it from your Classic Mac or extract it from a Mac ROMs update link that is still active at Apple.

If you do not need Lion, stick with Snow Leopard on your newly acquired old Mac Pro!  Save Lion for when you can afford more modern hardware.

Lastly, much of my research and experience with SheepShaver is posted on the MacRumors forums for an OP who wanted to continue playing the game Risk II.  That is why my screenshots, posted above, show Risk II running in SheepSaver in Lion.

Thanks for trying to help, Michael.   Unfortuantely, I am not facile enough with this stuff to be able to accomplish something even if I'm told exactly how to do it - otherwise I would just download Sheepshaver, and as you say I can easily get the ROM and I have OS9.

But, for legal reasons I presume, you are speaking in riddles.   I did find the torrent I THINK you were trying to get me too.   I dowloaded the "magnet", but again, when I bring it up in Miro, nothing happens (it says "starting up" but nothing actually downloads).   I tried just clicking the download button, but creepy stuff happens, it seems to endlessly loop a video, but the video is just a thing telling me I need to download a "new codec pack". W T F ?

On the other topic, are you saying it's not recommended to try to run Lion on MacPro1,1 ?

I have no advice on the MacPro 1,1 as I have no experience with it.

Reread my post and send me an email.

Miro is the wrong application; try downloading and installing Vuze to use with magnets

Thanks, it seems to be working with Vuze.

MacPro1,1 is the versio I have.    I thought you earlier said I should save Lion for when I can afford more modern hardware, is why I asked.

The Mac Pro 1,1 was introduced in August 2006 according to MacTracker; others will have to let you know if it can run Lion.  But, your need to run PPC software was the main reason I suggested staying with Snow Leopard.

"The Mac Pro completed Apple's transition to Intel processors, replacing the PowerMac G5 (Late 2005) as Apple's professional desktop Mac. The Mac Pro was based on two 64-bit, dual-core Intel Xeon 5100 "Woodcrest" processors, which included a 128-bit Vector Engine. The Mac Pro's case resembled its PowerMac predecessor's--with the exception of a second optical drive bay--but the interior of the case was completely redesigned. The Xeon processors required less heat-dissipation than G5 processors, allowing a smaller cooling system. The Mac Pro had four easily accessible hard drive bays (for a BTO maximum of 2 TB of storage) and easy access to its 8 RAM slots, which allowed for a maximum of 16 GB of RAM. With the Mac Pro, Apple decided to do something different in terms of configuration. Since the majority of Apple's professional customers tended to heavily-customize their Macs at purchase time, Apple offered a single, heavily customizable Mac Pro model. The single model sold for $2,499 U.S., and included two 2.66 GHz, dual-core Intel Xeon 5100 processors, 1 GB of RAM, a 250 GB hard disk, a SuperDrive, and an Nvidia GeForce 7300GT graphics card with 256MB of VRAM. BTO options included 2.0 and 3.0 GHz processors, up to 16 GB of RAM, up to 2 TB of storage, a second SuperDrive, a variety of graphics cards, and AirPort and Bluetooth support."

Michael, as I said, I succeeded in downloading, installing, and running the 4.0.1 version of ChubbyBunny.   It appears to incorporate an old version of Sheepshaver though, as there doesn't even appear to be a Preferences pane, and thus no way to increase the window size beyond 1024x856.   More significantly, not all of the OS9 apps seem to show up - inlcuding ClarisDraw, the one that prompted me to go to all this trouble in the first place.   I'm pretty sure I've managed to put the folder containing my OS9 apps into the right place, because a lot of them DO show up.    Is the issue that I somehow need to get a later version of SS, or that ClarisDraw simply won't run under OS9.0.4 ??   Thanks.

P.S. In case, any Apple lawyers are reading this, I have an old OS9 machine gathering dust in my attic, and thus have licenses for the ROM code and OS9.    I don't really want to have an old machine hooked up and have to boot it up to run this one app.

My About SheepShaver is Version 2.3.20101106

My About this Computer is Mac OS 9.0.4

There is clearly a Preferences in the SheepShaver menu, just under About SheepShaver

    What does yours say?

PS: Do you have iChat - I am MichaelLAX

Michael, I got the About this Computer is Mac OS 9.0.4

But SS is just Version 2.3.  And there is no Preferences pane below About Sheepshaver.   I gotta rack now though.   Thanks much !

There seems to be some discussion that ClarisWorks, including ClarisDraw was replaced by Appleworks.

Have you tried to see if AppleWorks would satify your needs? It runs up through Snow Leopard. Here I have it running in Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) installed into Parallels 7 in Lion:

Maybe you can send me some sample ClarisWorks files to see if they open in AppleWorks...

I'll have a look at Appleworks and send you one of my ClarisDraw files - when I get a chance, work week starting ;-(    HOw would one go about getting Appleworks, if it does work ?

It is unfair to others that we post a step by step chat of your problems.

I'll continue when you contact me with some samples privately, and then we can post solutions when we achieve them.
